Newman Strikes Out 11 In Start, Records Four RBI At The Dish
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team began the weekend series against Memphis on Friday (Feb. 23), claiming a 9-1 victory over the Tigers in the first ever meeting between the two programs. After three scoreless innings for both teams to start the game, BGSU erupted for three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to build the lead to 4-0. Leighton Banjoff hit a two-run home run in the seventh before another run crossed in the eighth for a 7-0 tally entering the final frame. DJ Newman sealed the win with a two-run home run of his own in the ninth for the 9-1 victory.
Newman was electric for the Falcons on both sides of the game. On the mound, he struck out 11 batters while not allowing a run and giving up just two hits and one walk. As for at the plate, Newman went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and a team-leading four RBI while also scoring twice.

Bowling Green will continue their weekend series against Memphis with games on Saturday (Feb. 24) and Sunday (Feb. 25). The game on Saturday is scheduled for a 3 p.m. EST first pitch while Sunday will start an hour earlier at 2 p.m. EST.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first inning, Nathan Archer knocked a two-out single for the first hit of the game, but Memphis worked through the inning without damage.
- On the defensive side, DJ Newman began his outing on the mound with a strikeout looking. A line out and another strikeout for Newman kept the 0-0 score in place after one.
- The Falcons were able to get runners to second and third in the second with two outs, but couldn't get a run across.
- Memphis hit a double off the left center wall to start the bottom of the second, but Newman tallied two strikeouts before a ground out to get out of the inning.
- Moving to the batter's box, Newman began the third inning with a walk followed by a walk to Sam Seidel as well. The Tigers worked out of the jam.
- Newman continued his strong start on the mound in the bottom half, adding two more strikeouts to his tally.
- In the fourth, Jack Krause drew his second walk of the game before stealing second and taking third on a throwing error from the catcher on the steal. Garrett Wright followed with a single into right, scoring Krause for a 1-0 BGSU lead.
- Leighton Banjoff was hit by a pitch before contact from TJ Takats moved the runners to second and third. Newman slapped a two-RBI double to center, scoring both Wright and Banjoff to extend the lead to 3-0.
- In the fifth, the Falcons used patience for a two-out rally. Krause drew another walk before Wright reached on an error. Back-to-back walks to Banjoff and Takats plated Krause for a 4-0 score.
- After a silent sixth, Banjoff belted a two-run home run to left center in the seventh, scoring Ross after he was hit by a pitch, to push the lead to 6-0.
- Newman struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to keep BGSU in front 6-0.
- Newman continued his do-it-all day in the eighth, leading off with a single. He took second on a pass ball. Seidel walked before a double steal put runners at second and third. Brady Birchmeier put a ball in play, scoring Newman, for a 7-0 lead.
- Landon Willeman came on in the eighth and sent the Tigers down in order, including a strikeout.
- Takats reached base via walk in the ninth before Newman capped off his day with a two-run home run to center, pushing the lead to 9-0.
- Memphis added one run in the ninth for the 9-1 final.

- The win marks the first for BGSU over Memphis as this was the first game all-time between the two teams. The Falcons have now defeated 218 different opponents in program history.
- With his RBI single in the top of the fourth, Garrett Wright logged his first collegiate RBI. Wright came around to score in the inning as well, his first run scored at BGSU.
- Scoring in the fourth inning, Jack Krause has now scored in three straight games for the Falcons and five times this season.
- DJ Newman's RBI double in the fourth inning marked his first double of the season and second for BGSU this year. Newman also tallied a career-high four RBI. He's now the only Falcon to log a hit in each of BGSU's first four games and has multiple hits in each game as well.
- On the mound, Newman recorded 11 strikeouts for the Orange and Brown, a new career-high and the first Falcon pitcher to reach double-digits strikeouts this season.
- Leighton Banjoff knocked his first home run of the year in the seventh inning, giving BGSU seven home runs, all by different batters. Newman hit one later in the game as the first repeat home run hitter for Bowling Green this season.
- Drawing two walks, TJ Takats has now reached base in each of BGSU's four games, beginning his collegiate career with a four-game on-base streak. Krause walked three times, extending his on-base streak to four games as well.
