He was also a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases, tied for 16th in the nation for stolen bases per game. Newman also got the start on the mound Friday, striking out five to tie for the team lead.
BGSU Launch Party
In the first game of the season, Bowling Green recorded eight runs against Middle Tennessee, all being produced by home runs. BGSU hit five home runs in the season opener and the momentum carried into the second game of the season with the first runs crossing in the same way. As a team, the Falcons belted six home runs during the opening weekend, the most in the MAC and tied for 26th in the nation, with all six being hit by different players.
Swiping Second And Taking Third
As a team, the Falcons stole eight bases during the opening weekend series, tied for 28th in the country. The mark has pushed BGSU's average to 2.67 stolen bases per game, which is tied for 21st in the nation and leads the MAC. Five different Falcons swiped a bag against Middle Tennessee with DJ Newman logging three and Leighton Banjoff tallying two in the series. Last year, the Falcons stole 80 bases, the third-most since 2011 for the program. In 2022, the team swiped 89, the most since 2011.
Mitchell's Strong Start In BGSU Debut
A transfer to the Falcons this season from Wright State, sophomore pitcher Calvin Mitchell earned the Sunday start in the opening series and put together a strong showing. Going five innings, Mitchell didn't allow an earned run in the game, striking out four and walking just one. The effort was enough to earn the first BGSU win of the season, moving to 1-0 on the year on the mound.
