Anderson Drives in Four & Dolejs Continues to Hit, But Falcons Fall at KSU
April 20, 2024 | Softball
KENT, Ohio – Scarlet Anderson drove in four runs and Peyton Dolejs continued her hot-hitting ways, but the Bowling Green State University softball team dropped a doubleheader to host Kent State University on Saturday (April 20) afternoon. The Golden Flashes picked up wins by scores of 7-4 and 4-1 in Mid-American Conference action at Devine Diamond.
Anderson, who entered the day with two career RBI in 33 at-bats for the Falcons, drove in four runs in the twinbill, including three in the opener.Â
Dolejs had three hits in the double-dip, extending her current hitting streak to nine games in the process. She went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the opener, and had another hit in the nightcap.
Aaralyn Nogay had a hit in each end of the twinbill, with an RBI in game one and a walk and a run in game two. Fellow freshman Taylor Behrendt went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener, and drew a walk in the nightcap.
BGSU-KSU GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Golden Flashes got on the board first, with a pair of second-inning runs. Carley Penner walked, stole second and took third on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk to Delaney Robeson with two outs, Bri Despines followed with an RBI single. Despines then got caught in a rundown several pitches later, staying alive long enough to allow Robeson to score from third.
• The Falcons bounced back immediately, with two runs in the top of the third. Mackenna Fry began the inning with a walk, and Aaralyn Nogay followed with a grounder back to the circle, but both runners were safe when KSU pitcher Megan Nuechterlein's throw to second was low. A fielder's choice put runners at the corners, but Nuechterlein got a strikeout for out number two.
• Cameron Kaufman drew a walk to load the bases, however, and Scarlet Anderson came through with a base hit to center that plated both Fry and Nogay.
• The Flashes answered quickly, as Alexandria Whitmore was hit by a pitch and came around to score after back-to-back singles by Savannah Wing and Julia Mazanec. On the latter play, however, BG right fielder Kaylee Cole threw out Wing attempting to advance to third. Another single and an infield error loaded the bases, but second baseman Fry and shortstop Kaufman then turned an inning-ending double play, with Kaufman firing to first baseman Anderson for out number three.
• BG battled back once again in the fourth. Taylor Behrendt singled for the second time in as many at-bats, and took second on Cole's sac bunt. Then, Behrendt came around to score on Nogay's two-out single to center, tying the game at 3-3.
• But, the hosts again had an answer. KSU plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Brynn Libler led off with a single and scored on a Despines one-out double. Despines would score when Mazanec's hot grounder was off the glove of a diving Kaufman and trickled into left for a single.
• Peyton Dolejs singled on the first pitch of the fifth inning and motored all the way to third when Reagan Williamson's ground ball went through second baseman Robeson's legs for an error. KSU retired the next hitter, but Anderson plated Dolejs with a grounder to the left side, for Anderson's third RBI of the game.
• It was a one-run game, but again the Flashes had an answer. After a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning, Robeson extended the KSU lead to 7-4 with a two-out, two-run homer to right.
• Nuechterlein retired the Falcons in order in the sixth, and after Dolejs doubled to the gap with two outs in the seventh, the KSU hurler was able to get the final out when a soft liner off the bat of Williamson was hit directly to the shortstop.
• KSU had a 9-6 lead in the hits department, with Mazanec going 3-for-4 and Despines 2-for-3. Behrendt was 2-for-3 for the Falcons, while Dolejs was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
• Anderson drove in three of the Falcons' four runs.
• Nuechterlein picked up the complete-game win for the Flashes, walking three batters and striking out five.
BGSU-KSU GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Nuechterlein started the second game as well, and Nogay began the contest with a scorcher to right that was grabbed by a retreating Wing. With two outs, Behrendt walked and Anderson singled up the middle. But, another hard-hit ball, a liner off the bat of Kaufman, was snared by Wing in foul ground.
• BGSU starter Madi Young walked Despines to begin the bottom of the inning, and after Wing's single, the Flashes had runners at second and third with just one out. But, Young struck out cleanup hitter Mazanec before getting Emily Lippe to hit an inning-ending grounder to short.
• Megan Claerhout singled and Libler doubled with one out in the KSU second, however, and Robeson and Despines each followed with hits. The Robeson single plated a run, but after Kaufman made a diving stop of the Despines ball up the middle, second baseman Fry threw Libler out attempting to score.
• BGSU tied the score in the third. Nogay and Dolejs each singled, and a Behrendt sac bunt put the runners at second and third. Nogay was able to tag and score on an Anderson sacrifice fly to left.
• The Flashes, however, responded with a run in the bottom of the third to take the lead. A walk to Mazanec, a Lippe single and an error loaded the bases before Mazanec scored on Claerhout's sac fly that made it a 2-1 game.
• BG threatened in the fourth, with singles by Ashley Chevalier and Makailah Dees and a sac bunt by Fry, but Nuechterlein was able to get an inning-ending strikeout.
• Young worked a perfect fourth inning, and Ellie Price came on and retired the Flashes in order in the fifth. Then, BGSU threatened against reliever Ella Esterby in the sixth.
• With one out, Chevalier was hit by a pitch before taking second on a groundout. Marti Henkel had a pinch-hit hit-by-pitch, and Nogay walked to load the bases. Dolejs had a lengthy at-bat which included a line drive down the right-field line that landed just foul. Several pitches later, she hit another liner, but Wing was able to track it down in right.
• KSU added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth. Lippe led off with a single, and Penner reached on a slow roller. After a sac bunt, with Libler and Robeson came through with RBI hits to give the Flashes a 4-1 advantage. Emma Denison came on and got the third out of the inning.
• Nuechterlein returned to the circle for the seventh, and Kaufman roped a ball to the wall in right-center for a two-out double. But, the KSU hurler was able to retire the next hitter to close out the win.
• Seven different players had a hit apiece for the Falcons, including Nogay, who added a walk and a run, and Anderson, who drove in BG's lone run.
• In addition to the seven hits, the Falcons drew a pair of walks and saw two batters hit by a pitch. But, BGSU left a season-high 11 runners on base in the game.
• For the Flashes, Libler, Lippe and Robeson each went 2-for-3.
• Nuechterlein earned the win in the circle, allowing seven hits in six innings while walking one and whiffing five.
• Young took the loss for the Falcons despite allowing just one earned run in four innings of work. She allowed six hits, walking two and striking out one.Â
