THIS WEEK IN FALCON HOCKEY ...
Bowling Green (3-5-0, 0-4-0-0) is ready to “welcome” the No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish to the BGSU Ice Arena (Bowling Green, Ohio) for a two-game, weekend series. These are the first games of a four-game set that the two teams will play this season. The next set in this cluster will be played in the Joyce Center (Notre Dame, Ind.). The games this weekend will bring a flare of glory from the past when recently retired NHL defenseman and former BGSU Falcon Rob Blake will return to campus in support of the “Bring Back the Glory” campaign.

LAST TIME OUT ...
Last weekend the Falcons engaged in an unsuccessful roadtrip to Fairbanks, Alaska when the team was swept by the Nanooks. Both games ended in 4-1 scores in favor of No. 15 Alaska. Bowling Green remained dorment on special teams as the team went 0-for-10 on the power play and allowed four power-play goals to the Nanooks. Cam Wojtala (Trenton, Mich.) scored his first collegiate goal in the Saturday game while captain David Solway (Green Bay, Wisc.) netted the Falcons other goal on the weekend. Andrew Hammond (Surrey, British Columbia) set a new career high in saves with 44, a mark he previously set nearly a year to the day on Oct. 31 at Nebraska-Omaha last season.
ROB BLAKE RETURNS ON SATURDAY!
In support of the “Bring Back the Glory” campaign, recently retired NHL defenseman and former Falcon All-American Rob Blake will be returning to Bowling Green this weekend. There will be a welcoming reception held at the Mileti Alumni Center from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6. To register for the event, click here. Interested parties can also register for the reception by contacting the Office of Alumni and Development at (419) 372-2424 or respond@bgsu.edu. Walk ups will also be welcome.
Tickets are $25 or $100 per person. The $100 ticket includes a $75 tax-deductible gift to the “Bring Back the Glory” campaign, an autographed photo of Blake and recognition of your donation at the event. BGSU communications alum and NHL television broadcaster, Dr. Mike “Doc” Emrick, will serve as the guest emcee to the event.
Following the reception, Blake will be introduced by Emrick and recognized at center ice. Blake will also conduct the ceremonial first drop of the puck. During the first intermission, the public is invited to a Rob Blake autograph session in the southeast corner of the ice arena.
Come to the BGSU Ice Arena to show your support for Rob Blake, the “Bring Back the Glory” campaign and the Falcon hockey team all weekend long. Student admission is free with a valid ID. Standard ticket rates apply.
BERGERON FEATURED ON NHL.COM
In a piece by James Murphy of NHL.com, the four new NCAA head coaches were featured in their debuts with their new prospective teams. Falcon fans have actually already seen two of the featured coaches and will eventually get to see the reamainging two on the ice against their Falcons. Bowling Green head coach Chris Bergeron, Alabama-Huntsville head coach Chris Luongo, Ohio State head coach Mark Osieki and Western Michigan head coach Jeff Blashill all were featured in the piece and can be read on the National Hockey League website or by simply clicking here.
MATSUMOTO SCORES FIRST NHL GOAL AFTER HIS CALL UP
After being called up by the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 31 (see fact #3 on note below) Matsumoto scored his first and second NHL goals in the same game, the second of his NHL career. The 'Canes went on to a 7-2 win over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night. Click here for the game recap.
THE 'STARTING 5': FIVE FACTS ON FALCON HOCKEY
(1) Former Falcon great and future NHL Hall of Famer Rob Blake will be returning to Bowling Green on Nov. 6 when the Falcons play the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. For more details, please visit BGSUFalcons.com and click on the hockey homepage, or see page 1 of the notes.
(2) The Falcons are three wins away from achieving 800 wins in the program's 41-year varsity history. They swept the UAH Chargers last week to improve its all-time program record to 797-699-100.
(3) Former Falcon forward Jonathan Matsumoto was called up from the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) by the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 31. He made his NHL debut the next day versus the team that traded him in the offseason, the Philadelphia Flyers in a 4-3 loss. (Ironically enough, former Ohio State Buckeye Zac Dalpe was one of two players sent down to Charlotte to make room for Matsumoto in the move).
UPDATE: Matsumoto tallied two goals on 11/3/10 against the New York Islanders for his first scores as a professional. Click here for the recap from the Hurricanes' website.
(4) In nine different weekend sets last year, the Falcons faired worse in game two of a series. In four weekends, the Falcons have either closened the scoring margin, turned a “L” into a “W” or widened the margin of victory three times.
(5) The all-time series between the Falcons and Fighting Irish favors UND, 48-35-8, though BGSU had success against them last season with a 1-1-2 mark with two shutout victories, good for seven points.
FORGET THE RANKING, BRING'EM ON!
Over the last four weekends, BGSU has played two teams with a number in front of its name. To open the 2010-11 season, BGSU hosted Michigan (then ranked fourth by USCHO.com) but lost by decisions of 4-1 and 4-2. Two weeks later, the Falcons traveled out to Fairbanks, Alaska to play the Alaska Nanooks (then ranked 14th) and again were swept by scores of 4-1 and 4-1. Bowling Green again welcomes a nationally-ranked opponent with Notre Dame coming to town (now ranked 11th).
Last year, the Falcons had the most success with UND than any other CCHA team with a 1-1-2-2 mark against them, and that loss coming in overtime. Then again, BGSU was 2-15-3 against ranked competition last season. As the rankings sit right now, the Falcons have five teams in the USCHO.com top-20 and three additional teams that received votes earlier this week on their schedule.
HAMMOND SETS NEW CAREER HIGH
Though it came in a 4-1 loss and was due to a defense that allowed 48 shots on goal during the contest, sophomore goaltender Andrew Hammond (Surrey, British Columbia) set a new career high in saves during a single game after a 44-save performance against the then No. 14 Alaska Nanooks. Twenty-two of those saves were made in the first period alone after he was peppered with 25 shots in the frame. He alllowed three goals in the first period against the Nanooks and then stopped 22 of the next 23 shots during the rest of the game.
