RECENT LATE INNING SUCCESSES
Over the last five games, the Falcons have had many runs cross the plate in the latter innings of their contest. From innings six through nine, the Falcons have scored 33 runs in their last five games (6.6 runs/game). The Falcons scored more runs in the sixth (7), seventh (11) and eighth (13) innings than any other inning in their last five. Overall, the Falcons have scored 50 runs in 18 games in innings six through nine as opposed to 59 in innings one through five. Against EKU (3/19-20), the Falcons scored 25 of their 37 runs in the sixth through eighth inning and took leads that led to wins after the sixth inning in all three games.
HITTIN' THE RHOADES
Spending much of the season as a reserve, freshman Taylor Rhoades received his call to action on 3/24 in a pinch hit situation against Central Michigan. In his first collegiate at-bat, Rhoades belted a double down the left field line in the Falcons' 2010 home opening loss to CMU. His double led the eighth inning off and he later scored on a Brandon McFarland double.
SPENCER COMES ALIVE!
The All-MAC second teamer from a season ago had struggled thus far this season, but Derek Spencer showed his true colors (Brown and Orange of course) on 3/24 against CMU when he belted three hits and racked up four RBI. Three of his four RBI came on a base-clearing double in the Falcons' three-run seventh inning in their 12-7 loss. He had previously been held hitless in his last three games. His three-hit performance against CMU was his second multi-hit game of the season (the other on 3/9 vs. Sacred Heart).
DOUBLE OR NOTHING
Matt Vannett has made the most of his playing time this season as a reserve catcher for the Falcons. In his four games he has played in to date, Vannett has amounted four hits in ten plate appearances. Of his four hits, three have been doubles, all recording an RBI.
“(T)OWERING (J)ACKS” BLANTON?
After having games two and three in a series with Eastern Kentucky (3/20) were rescheduled for a doubleheader, no Falcon took advantage of the long day more than T.J. Blanton. On the day, Blanton hit four home runs, including a career high three jacks in game one of the doubleheader against the Colonels in a 19-10 win. Blanton hit two-run home runs in each of his first three at-bats in a game where he finished going 4-for-5. Blanton finished with seven RBI in the game, also a new career high and one short of tying a program game-high shared by four former Falcons. His four hits also tied a career high set last season. Not finished, Blanton hit his fourth home run in the second game of the day, another two-run homer. Blanton finished the day going 5-for-8 with four home runs and nine RBI between both games. *update* Blanton also belted his sixth home run of the season against WVU (3/23), creating a three game home run streak.
BLANTON NAMED MAC EAST POW
The Mid-American Conference office announced on 3/22 that outfielder T.J. Blanton was named the MAC East Player of the Week after his four home run, nine RBI performance against Eastern Kentucky this weekend. Blanton had a career day in the first of two games played on Saturday, March 20 when he went 4-for-5 at the plate, belting home runs in each of his first three at-bats. He ended his seven RBI game with a two run single in his last at-bat as a part of a nine-run eighth inning that sealed a 19-10 win for the Falcons. Blanton also added two steals on the day. His four hits tied a career-high he set last season while his three home runs and seven RBI in a game set new career marks in those categories. In game two of that set on Saturday, Blanton added his fourth home run of the day with a two-out, two-RBI homer that was part of the four-run sixth inning that marked their second come-from-behind victory of the day. He finished the weekend hitting 7-for-13 (.538) with a .538 on-base percentage. He stole three bases and in the field made 11 put outs over the course of the series. His weekend slugging percentage ended with a team-high 1.462 mark and amounted 19 total bases in that time.
NUMBER 1,000 = “W” FOR SCHMITZ
The momentus occasions continue to amount for head coach Danny Schmitz, in his 20th season with the Brown and Orange. On 3/19, Schmitz led his team onto the diamond for the 1,000th time in his coaching career and came away with an 11-9 Falcon win. The win was his 521st overall win as well. Schmitz now has a career record of 523-476-5.
