LAST TIME OUT
After a crushing 5-2 defeat in East Lansing, Mich. on Friday night (Feb. 26), the Falcons rebounded with a 2-2 tie and 1-0 shootout victory against the No. 12/13 Michigan State Spartans. The two teams exchanged power-play goals between MSU's Andrew Rowe and BGSU's David Solway (Green Bay, Wisc.). Going into the third period tied at one, Bowling Green's freshman of the year candidate Jordan Samuels-Thomas (Windsor, Conn.) caught the rebound of a Tommy Dee (Maple Grove, Minn.) shot and wrapped it around the near-side post for a power-play goal early in the third period to take a 2-1 lead. At the 15-minute mark, Michian State tied it up when Chris Forfar caught a loose puck out in front of the Falcon cage and had an empty net to shoot for anfter Falcon goaltender Andrew Hammond (Surrey, B.C.) was caught up traffic. After a scoreless overtime and five unsuccessful shootout attempts, Tomas Petruska (Presov, Slovakia) capped off his own Senior Night with the game-deciding tally, giving the Falcons a shootout win to end the year and a firm grip on the 11-seed in the conference tournament.
KRELOVE HONING IN ON A HUNDY
With the 2009-10 season coming to close, junior defenseman Andrew Krelove (Thunder Bay, Ontario) is quickly approaching game number 100 in his Falcon career. Assuming the Krelove plays at least two games this weekend at UNO (March 6-8), he will play game #99 on Friday and #100 on Saturday against the Mavericks. Krelove has been a main component of the power play and penalty kill units this season, as well as one of the veteran 'D'-men on a very young Falcon core. He has a 2009-10 line of 0-4--4.
POWER (PLAY) SURGE
After being left with zero power-play goals in their last two games (8 PP chances) prior to Saturday night's season finale versus Michigan State (Feb. 27), the Falcons went on a power-play surge with two goals in nine man-advantage chances against the Spartans in their 2-2 tie. Twice more this season have the Falcon been held scoreless on 12 or more power-play chances and then scored two or more power-play goals to break their streak. After being held scoreless over 18 chances between Jan. 23 - Feb. 12, the Falcons sounded the horn three times in the next two games. Nov. 21 to Dec, 4 the Falcons went 16 chances without a goal a man up until they averaged just under one PPG every four chances over the next four games.
SENIORS THE TALK OF THE TOWN ON 'THEIR NIGHT'
Before Saturday night's regular season finale begins against No. 12/13 Michigan State, eight of our beloved Falcons were be honored for their contributions to the BGSU Hockey Program and for their achievements over the last four years. Kyle Page (Wixom, Mich.), James Perkin (Calgary, Alb.), Josh Boyd (Columbus, Ohio), Kai Kantola (Raleigh, N.C.), Phil Greer (Franklin, Mass.), Brian Moore (Carmel, Ind.), Tomas Petruska (Presov, Slovakia) and Tommy Dee (Maple Grove, Minn.) will all be recognized prior to their last home game wearing the Brown and Orange.
...AND THEN...
Petruska stole the spotlight after two underclassmen scored power-play goals in their 2-2 regulation tie when he went on to be the only player between the two teams to score a goal in the tiebreaking shootout. Swinging to the far-side dashers, Petruska cut back in toward MSU goaltender Drew Palmisano and made a last-second decision to go five-hole on the Spartan, giving Bowling Green the SOW.
