BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- After a morning-long light rain softened Warren E. Steller Field (Bowling Green, Ohio) for play between the Falcons and RedHawks for game two, Bowling Green tossed out a series of hard blows with their offense early in the game. As was done Friday afternoon, Bowling Green scored in succession tallying all seven of their runs between the second and fifth inning on Saturday. A simple ground out scored the deciding run in the home half of the fifth inning and despite Miami returning fire with six runs in the middle frames. The Falcons' held on for a 7-6 win and after Kent State splitting a doubleheader with Ohio across the state, the Brown and Orange now come within a half game of the Mid-American Conference, Eastern Division lead.
After a scoreless first inning, Bowling Green scored the game's first six runs to give them a 6-0 lead. The game-winning run was score after a Miami four-run inning. In the bottom of the fifth leading 6-4, Derek Spencer doubled of the wall in the left center field gap to lead off the inning. A ground out to the right side advanced Spencer to third before reigning MAC East Player of the Week Jon Berti followed suit with a ground out, but his soft weed-killer to short was enough to plate Spencer from third and give the Falcons what would eventually turn into the game-winning run.
Miami did make the contest close scoring six runs between innings five and six. Bowling Green starting pitcher Michael Frank tossed four innings of scoreless baseball before allowing four runs in the fifth to Miami. All done with two outs, the RedHawks a double, two singles and a walk to score. Charles Wooten pitched in relief of Frank and after surrendering the two-RBI single that closed the book on Frank closed out the inning.
The RedHawks added two more runs after falling behind 7-4. Wooten allowed two doubles and a single to allow the two runs. An addition single and fielding error in the inning did not hurt the Falcons after Wooten forced Miami third baseman Brad Gschwind into a ground out to end the inning.
In the seventh and eighth innings, Wooten shut down the Miami offense and struck out four of the six batters he faced in that time. He kept the RedHawk offense scoreless into the ninth where Patrick O'Brien took over and completed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, notching his third save of the season.
Bowling Green lit up the scoreboard first in the second inning scoring once. After Berti cracked a line shot that paralleled the left field chalk, he stretched the hit into a double with pure hustle around the bases. It paid off when two batters later, freshman Matthew Pitzulo brought him around the remaining 90 feet to home plate with a double to deep center field.
The Brown and Orange added three more runs with two homers from the heart of the lineup in the bottom of the third. With a runner on first, Spencer struck again with his third home run of the series. His two-run shot gave the Falcons a three-run lead, at the time, before Mark Galvin added to that number. Sustaining a 15-game hitting streak, Galvin followed Spencer's home run with a solo shot of his own. The round-tripper gave the Falcons a 4-0 lead and extended the Pickerington, Ohio native's hit streak to 16 games.
#T.J. Blanton# finished the day with a 3-for-5 effort but stuffed his stat line with two RBI with a two-run single in the fourth inning.
Frank struck out six hitters in his 4.1 innings on the hill, tying a career high in the category that he set against Eastern Kentucky (3/20).
The Falcons (21-18-1, 11-6) earned their 11th straight victory and gear up for the season finale against the RedHawks (20-22, 7-10) on Saturday. Looking around the scoreboards in the MAC, the Kent State Golden Flashes had a one game lead over Bowling Green coming into Saturday's action, but split a rescheduled doubleheader with Ohio University. With Bowling Green's win and Kent State's split, the Falcons now sit a half game back from the Golden Flashes for first place in the division standings. Bowling Green was at one point in fourth place in the East Division but has climbed three spots over the last three weeks to share first place. The Falcons will look for their third consecutive weekend sweep in the series finale with the RedHawks Sunday. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
