BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Some good things must come to an end and on Sunday the Falcons' 11 game winning streak came to a close after the Miami RedHawks beat Bowling Green, 8-6. The Falcons collected four home runs, including two from senior leftfielder Dennis Vaughn, but three of the team's round-trippers were solo shots. The Falcons made a respectable comeback scoring in the game's last three innings, but it was not enough to prevail in the series finale.
Though the Falcons dropped only their second game in fifteen games, one streak remains after the loss. Mark Galvin brought a 17 game hitting streak into Sunday's contest. The senior had a single to right field in his first at-bat, extending his personal streak to 18 straight games with a hit and finished 1-for-4 at the plate on the day.
Of the four home runs the Falcons belted out of a very windy Warren E. Steller Field, #T.J. Blanton# led the parade off with a two-run homer to center field, just to the right of the batter's eye. His home run was the only four-bagger that was not a solo shot, plating Jon Berti who led the Falcons off with a single.
After the RedHawks tied the game at two placing a single run in the first and second innings, the Falcons regained the lead with a solo blast from the team's standout freshman, Matthew Pitzulo on a laser that tore through the trees beyond the right field fence.
After Miami scored four unanswered runs to take a 5-3 lead, Bowling Green began building their picket fence with a trio of runs scored in consecutive innings. Vaughn was responsible for two of those three runs after hitting solo home runs in the seventh and ninth innings, both times with two outs. In addition, the Falcons scored once in the eighth. Berti used his speed to extend what to many would be a normal single into a double, sliding safely into second base. After a single by Tyler Elkins put runners on the corners, Clay Duncan brought Berti home with a deep fly to center that was caught with Miami outfielder Ryan Brenner's back to the wall.
Kevin Leady (6-2) took the loss, only his second of the season and first since his second start of the season against then-#29 Kentucky on February 28. Leady gave up seven runs, six earned, on the day while striking out six in 6.1 innings on the mound. He allowed three home runs to the RedHawks, including a two-run homer by Kyle Weldon in Miami's three-run fifth inning that served as the turning point of the game.
The deciding run was tallied in the seventh inning when Leady surrendered a solo home run to Miami right fielder Ryan Eaton. Miami's final run was also scored by Eaton in the ninth against BGSU reliever Ross Gerdeman. In the sophomore right-hander's third inning of relief, Gerdeman went too far inside on Eaton and hit him with a pitch on his lead arm. After Eaton stole both second and third, Jon Edgington scored his teammate with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Falcons (21-19-1, 11-7) finish the weekend winning 2-of-3 games against the RedHawks (21-22, 8-10) and remain one game behind the MAC East leader, Kent State. With finals week beginning on Monday, the Falcons will have no mid-week games. The next contest will be another home series against the Akron Zips beginning on Friday, May 7 at Steller Field.
