BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Defense again highlighter more than two of the three periods played between the Bowling Green Falcons and the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday night but the visitors again got the best of the Brown and Orange late in the game. After skating to a 1-1 tie through 55 minutes, the twentieth ranked Bulldogs pulled away with a late goal and an empty-net score for a 3-1 downing of the Falcons and the weekend sweep.

Despite possessing a 1-0-0 record when taking a tie game into the third period, the Falcons dropped their first game in such a circumstance with a goal scored in the 16th minute of the final period. Bowling Green limited the Bulldogs to only four shots on goal in the third but the second time a puck from a FSU shot bounced off a Falcon player and into their own net. Coming out of a breakout, Ferris State set up their offense and found center Travis Ouellette in the slot nearly 15 feet outside of the Falcon cage. From just outside the right faceoff circle, Ouellette took a one-timer and kicked a Falcon skating through the slot on defense and watched the puck slide past Falcon sophomore goaltender, Andrew Hammond (Surrey, British Columbia). The goal proved to be the eventual game clincher, putting Ferris State up 2-1 with 4:39 remaining in the game.
Bowling Green had its chances to tie the game up with time winding down. Their best chance came with just under a minute while skating six men after pulling Hammond out of the net. While battling for the puck deep in the Falcons' offensive zone, the puck bounced into the air and over the net. Senior captain David Solway (Green Bay, Wisc.) batted the puck out of the air and onto the ice for a point blank shot against FSU goaltender, Pat Nagle. Nagle deflected the bullet outward, thwarting BGSU's scoring chance.
Andrew Wallace (Bedford, Nova Scotia) came back with a moment that put fans at the BGSU Ice Arena on their feet for a moment. Skating around and looking for a shooting lane, the freshman chose his spot outside the top of the right faceoff circle and blasted a liner just wide of Nagle and the Bulldog net. That was the last scoring opportunity Bowling Green had before FSU's Jordie Johnston guided the puck into an empty Falcon net for the Bulldog's third and final goal, leading to a 3-1 Falcon defeat.
Bowling Green freshman Bryce Williamson (Seba Beach, Alberta) celebrated his first collegiate goal when putting the Falcons on the board first. In the seventh minute of the first period, Williamson received a pass from Solway at the top of the circles and fired a wrist shot that beat Nagle top shelf, glove side. Williamson's first career goal also gave Solway and Marc Rodriguez (Aurora, Ill.) their ninth assists on the season.
That lead was short-lived when Ferris State defenseman Zach Redmond tied the game at one at 10:49 in the first. Again the victims of an unlucky bounce, Redmond put a shot on Andrew Hammond that was saved and knocked away. The loose puck then struck freshman Jake Sloat (Louisville, Colo.) pursuing the play on defense and trickled through a hole and into the net. Both Ouellette and Redmond finished with two points on the night.
The loss completes the weekend sweep of the Falcons, now 7-15-2 overall and 2-12-2-0 in conference play. No. 20 Ferris State improves to 11-8-4 (8-6-3-2) on the year and will play the Michigan Wolverines next in a home-and-home series. Bowling Green will also take to the road for a weekend set with the nationally-ranked Miami RedHawks. The Falcons and RedHawks will take to the ice on Friday Jan. 14 at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday Jan. 15 at 7:35 p.m. at the Goggin Ice Center (Oxford, Ohio). The Brown and Orange will return to the BGSU Ice Arena to close out the month of January when they host the Lake Superior State Lakers on January 28-29.
