SAULT SAINTE MARIE, Mich. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated nationally ranked Lake Superior State University 1-0 Friday night to improve their record to 4-0-1 on the season. A power-play goal from freshman Adam Berkle was all junior goaltender Andrew Hammond needed, as the British Colombia native secured his second straight shutout and a Bowling Green win.
The first period belonged to the goaltenders, as neither team was able to light the lamp thanks to stellar goaltending from Hammond and LSSU sophomore Kevin Kapalka. The Falcons led the Lakers in shots 10-8, despite Lake Superior getting three power plays in the period.
The Falcons continued to pour on the shots throughout the second period, sending eight pucks on net in the second frame. The Falcons finally broke through Kapalka 12:11 into the period, when freshman Adam Berkle netted his first career goal on the power play. Freshman Dan DeSalvo sent the puck behind the net to sophomore Camden Wojtala, who fed Berkle for a one-timer in the low slot.
The goaltender duel continued into the third period, as both goalies made several game-saving stops. While Hammond only faced five Lake Superior shots in the final frame, the majority of them were quality chances in the closing minutes.
The last time Bowling Green shutout opponents in back-to-back games was during the 1973-74 opening set against the University of Guelph. The Falcons opened that year with 10-0 and 11-0 wins over Guelph, on their way to a 20 win season.
DeSalvo's assist on Bowling Green's goal was his fourth point of the year, and extended his current point streak to four games. The 1-0 Falcon win also marked the first game freshman Ryan Carpenter was unable to score a point, ending his four-game point streak. With Wojtala's assist on the Berkle goal, he moves into a tie with Carpenter for the team lead in points (6).
The win marked the Falcons first game of the year against a CCHA opponent, giving them a 1-0-0 record in the conference.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow night in a rematch against Lake Superior State. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
