The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team completed a sweep of the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers Saturday evening, giving the Falcons their second and third wins of the season. Bowling Green opened the series with a hard fought 2-1 win on Friday night, relying on goals from freshmen stand-outs Ryan Carpenter and Dan DeSalvo. The Falcons completed the sweep with a 3-0 win Saturday night, getting goals from Carpenter, Camden Wojtala and Andrew Wallace. Junior goaltender Andrew Hammond was spectacular over the weekend set, allowing only one goal in two games, earning his third career shutout on Saturday night.
Long Time No See
The win puts the Falcons record at 3-0-1, marking their best start since the 96-97 campaign. That year, Bowling Green opened the year with five straight victories, including wins against Ohio State, Boston College (two wins), and Lake Superior State (two wins). The 96-97 team would finish with a record of 17-16-5, good enough for fifth place in the CCHA.
The Last Time
The Falcons struggled against Lake Superior State last season, going 1-1-2-2, including back-to-back shootout losses in on the road. The Falcons however would get the best of the Lakers in the final meeting of the year between the programs. Bowling Green came out on top at home, beating the Lakers 2-1, thanks to goals from defensemen Ian Ruel and James McIntosh. Goaltender Andrew Hammond was credited with the win, allowing only one goal on 26 shots.
CCHA Goaltender of the Week
Junior Andrew Hammond earned a pair of wins over the weekend, allowing just one goal in two games of work. Hammond made 50 saves over the weekend series, setting a .50 goals-against-average with a save percentage of .980. Hammond blanked the Chargers Saturday night, earning his first shutout of the season, and third of his career. Hammond's numbers have been outstanding so far in the young season. He has played in every game for the Falcons, going 3-0-1 on the year. His goals-against-average for the year currently sits at 1.47; while his save percentage sits at .931.
Staying Positive
Although early, it is worth pointing out that not a single Falcon has a negative plus/minus on the year. Of the 20 Falcons who have played in at least one game thus far, only four are at an even mark, while the rest are +1 or higher. Sophomore Camden Wojtala and freshman Adam Berkle are tied for the team lead, with a +3 mark on the year. As a team, Bowling Green is a +24 on the season. At the end of last season, the only players who were in the positive were sophomores Reed Rushing (No longer with team) and Chad Sumsion.
Rookie of the Week Nomination
Freshman Ryan Carpenter continues to live up to expectations early on in the season. The Oviedo, Fla. native has tallied a point in every game this season, culminating in a four-game point streak. Carpenter currently leads the team in goals (3) and points (6), while holding a share for the team lead in assists (3) with sophomore Camden Wojtala. Carpenter scored the opening goals in both games against Alabama-Huntsville over the weekend, including a short-handed tally on Saturday.
We're Going Streaking
While freshman Ryan Carpenter leads Bowling Green with a four-game point streak, several other Falcons have respectable streaks of their own. Freshman Dan DeSalvo is currently riding a three-game point streak, including the game winning goal on Friday night. DeSalvo has a total of three points on the year, ranking third on the team. Sophomore Brett Mohler owns an assist streak after the weekend series against UAH. Mohler assisted on both of Carpenter's goals over the weekend, one ofwhich being short-handed.
Weekend of Firsts
Several Falcons finally got involved in the offense this past weekend after being held off the score sheet the previous series against UConn. Sophomore Andrew Wallace scored his first goal of the season over the weekend, marking the third of his career. Sophomore's Brett Mohler and Chad Sumsion recorded their first points of the young season, each tallying a pair of assists. Junior Ian Ruel participated in his first game of the year Friday evening, recording his first assist of the season on the game-winning goal by freshman Dan DeSalvo. Finally, seniorJames McIntosh saw his first action of the season, playing in both games against UAH.
Quick-Draw
Bowling Green has done exceptionally well in the face-off circle this season. Three of the Falcons' four centers are currently winning 50 percent or more of their draws, including sophomore Andrew Wallace, who leads the team with a 63 percent win rate. As a team, Bowling Green has a 52 percent win rate in the face-off circle.
Looking at LSSU
Lake Superior comes into the weekend with a record of 4-0-0, with two wins coming in the division against Michigan State. The Lakers other two wins come from a road sweep of Bowling Green's previous opponent, Alabama-Huntsville. While LSSU has yet to lose a game, every contest for the Lakers has been decided by one goal.
The Lakers are led by All-Conference Rookie (10-11) goaltender Kevin Kapalka, who has started every game for Lake Superior. Kapalka has allowed just nine goals on 102 shots. His save percentage currently sits at .912, while also boasting a 2.26 goals-against-average.
The Lakers are led offensively by sophomore forward Kyle Jean, who leads the team in points (6) and goals (4). Freshman forward Chris Ciotti has also contributed, ranking second on the team in points (5) and first in assists (4).
-The Lakers are accustomed to scoring quickly. Almost half of their goals this season have come in the first period. (6 of 13)
- Lake Superior has been much more disciplined this season than BG. The Lakers average four penalties a game while BG averages eight.
