Falcons Fight Back To Beat Miami In Shootout
November 19, 2011 | Ice Hockey
BOXSCORE
OXFORD, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated Miami University in a CCHA shootout Saturday night, breaking the Falcons 12 game losing streak to the RedHawks. Freshman Ryan Carpenter scored with just over a minute remaining in regulation to tie the game, allowing Sophomore Bryce Williamson to score the game winner in the shootout.
Junior Reilly Smith opened up the scoring for Miami, netting his eighth goal of the season on a shot from the bottom of the circle. Smith's goal at 6:17 of the first period gave Miami the 1-0 lead, and what looked like a carry over of momentum from the night before.
Miami continued to press the Falcons throughout the opening frame, getting plenty of quality chances on junior goaltender Andrew Hammond.
Bowling Green responded at the 16:26 mark of the first, netting a power-play goal to even the score. Sophomore Mike Fink tipped home his second goal of the year on a shot from freshman Mike Sullivan at the point. Sullivan's assist was his first point of the season, and first of his career.
With just under two minutes remaining in the opening period, Miami took advantage of a Bowling Green line change. Freshman Austin Czarnik took a cross-ice pass and skated in on Hammond, netting a wrist shot to put the score at 2-1.
The Falcons refused to let the late period goal deter them, as Bowling Green responded just 4:27 into the second frame. Freshman Dan DeSalvo roofed a wrist shot past Miami senior goaltender Cody Reichard while being dragged down in front. The goal marked the second power-play goal of the game for Bowling Green, and DeSalvo's fourth goal of the year.
The RedHawks responded with a power-play goal of their own roughly five minutes later. Senior Alden Hirschfield scored his third goal of the year on a rebound in front of Hammond, giving Miami the 3-2 advantage.
Bowling Green refused to fall, responding with an even strength goal from Williamson in the final minutes of the second period. Williamson shot the puck on net and followed his own rebound to score his sixth goal of the season. The late goal tied the game 3-3 at the end of the second period, with the Falcons being outshot 21-10.
The opening minutes of the third period appeared to be the end for the Falcons, as freshman Tyler Biggs skated in and took a wrist shot from the circle, beating Hammond, and putting the score at 4-3 in favor of Miami.
As the third period drew to a close, the Falcons began to pressure Miami. With 1:12 remaining in the contest, freshman Ryan Carpenter carried the puck into the Miami zone, and threw a wrister on net. The puck trickled past Reichard giving Carpenter his sixth goal of the year, and a tie hockey game.
Bowling Green survived overtime and sent the game to a shootout, where the Falcons were able to secure the victory after fighting back the entire game.
Bryce Williamson was the lone goal scorer for the Falcons in the shootout, which was all Hammond would need. Hammond stoned all three Miami shooters, giving Bowling Green the CCHA shootout victory.
Along with Sullivan, freshman Connor Kucera recorded his first collegiate point, assisting in Carpenter's game-tying goal in the final minutes of the third.
Carpenter's three-point night (1 goal, 2 assists) gives him the team lead in points for the year (14), passing sophomore Camden Wojtala (13). Carpenter is also tied with Williamson for the team lead in goals (6).
While the game is recorded as an NCAA tie, the CCHA shootout awards a valuable extra point to the Falcons in division play.
The Falcons now have an overall record of 6-6-2, with a record of 1-6-1-1 in conference play. Miami's overall record now sits at 6-6-2, with a record of 4-4-2-1 in conference play.
The Falcons are back in action this weekend at home against Alaska-Fairbanks. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
