Falcons Over The Weekend
The Falcons lost 4-0 to Ferris State Friday night, marking the first time this season that the Falcons have been shutout. The Bulldogs scored all of their goals at even-strength, registering four different goal scorers in the contest. Ferris State senior goaltender Taylor Nelson stopped all 29 shots he faced, giving him his second shutout of the young season. Ferris State registered a goal in every period, including two goals in the final frame to ice the contest for the Bulldogs. Junior Andrew Hammond stopped 25 of 29 shots in the 4-0 loss, marking his fourth straight game allowing three goals or more.
Bowling Green lost a 5-3 decision to Ferris State Saturday night, after allowing three goals in the first 12 minutes of play. Junior Andrew Hammond was pulled at the 11:50 mark of the first period, after allowing three goals on eight shots. Freshman Dan DeSalvo scored an even-strength tally, while sophomores Bryce Williamson and Ryan Viselli each registered a power-play goal. With the game tied at three in the second period, the Bulldogs added two more scores to secure the victory.
Losing Streak
The Falcons lost both games over the weekend to Ferris State, extending their current losing streak to five games. The weekend also marks the second straight home series the Falcons have failed to secure a point against a CCHA opponent, as Bowling Green lost both games to Notre Dame last week. The Falcons' current losing streak matches their longest of last season, which spanned nearly the entire month of January. Last year's streak started with a 4-1 loss to Ferris State (Jan. 7) and concluded with a 4-2 loss to Lake Superior (Jan. 28). Bowling Green defeated Lake Superior 2-1 at home to end the skid.
A New Foe
The Falcons welcome non-conference opponent Canisius this weekend, marking the first meeting between the programs. The Golden Griffins have competed at the DI level since the 1997-98 season, and now compete in the Atlantic Hockey Association. The Falcons opened the year going 1-0-1 against UConn, who also compete in the Atlantic Hockey Association.
Introducing Scott Zacharias
Junior Andrew Hammond was pulled in the first period of the Falcons 5-3 loss to Ferris State Saturday night, marking the first action of sophomore Scott Zacharias' career. Zacharias allowed two goals on 10 shots in roughly 46 minutes of work, earning the loss. The Manitoba native spent two seasons with the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the CJHL prior to coming to BGSU. During the 2009-10 season with Pembroke, he posted a 33-3-1 record with a 2.29 goals-against-average and a .926 save-percentage, recording seven shutouts.
Williamson Rolls
Despite being shut out on Friday and suffering from a lack of goals, sophomore Bryce Williamson continues to get on the score sheet. Williamson registered a power-play goal in Bowling Green's 5-3 loss Saturday night, giving him five goals on the year. Williamson leads the team in goals, and ranks fourth on the team in points (5). The Alberta native's five tallies also currently rank eighth in the CCHA.
Wojtala Back On Top
Sophomore Cam Wojtala and freshman Ryan Carpenter have battled all year for the team lead in points, switching between first and second place throughout the season. Wojtala's two assists Saturday night against Ferris State pushed him ahead once again, giving him nine points on the year. Carpenter currently ranks second on the team with eight points this season. Wojtala's seven assists are also good enough for the team lead, and rank him sixth in the CCHA.
Power Play Scoring
Bryce Williamson knocked home a power-play goal against Ferris State Saturday night, marking the Falcons' first power-play tally since Oct. 21, when freshman Adam Berkle scored the game-winner against Lake Superior State. Sophomore Ryan Viselli added a second power-play goal in the contest, marking the first two power-play goal game for Bowling since the season opener against UConn (4-4 tie).
Shutout
Senior Taylor Nelson stopped all 29 shots he faced against Bowling Green on Friday, marking his second shutout of the year. The last time the Falcons were shutout by a CCHA opponent at home was last January, when Bowling Green lost to conference rival Miami 3-0, behind a nine save effort from Connor Knapp.
Looking at Canisius
Canisius comes into Bowlling Green sporting an overall record of 2-3-1, securing both wins in conference play. The Golden Griffins opened the season with back-to-back losses at Quinnipiac, being outscored 11-1 on the weekend. Canisius responded with a convincing win over RIT at home, followed by a tie to Air Force on the road. The Griffins most recently split a pair of home games with Bentley, losing the opener Friday 2-0, and winning the second contest 3-1.
Sophomore Kyle Gibbons has led the charge for Canisius offensively, securing a point in all six games played this season. Gibbons' three goals and three assists lead both categories for the Golden Griffins, while his plus-3 mark on
the year is also a team-best. Junior Preston Shupe contributes as well, ranking second on the team in goals (2), assist (2), and points (4). The rest of the Golden Griffins' scoring attack is fairly balanced, as seven players have contributed two points on the year.
Similar to Ferris State, Canisius has implemented a goalie by committee approach. Dan Morrison and Tony Capobianco have each started three games for Canisius. Capobianco's numbers have been better, with a 2.61 goals-against-average and a .938 save percentage.
Canisius currently ranks last in the Atlantic Hockey Association in scoring, averaging only 1.7 goals-per-game. The Golden Griffins power play has struggled as well, converting only 10 percent of their opportunities this season.
