March 12, 2011 | Ice Hockey
ANN ARBOR, Michigan -- Bowling Green rode into the Yost Ice Arena budding with confidence stemming from last week's first round series win over the Northern Michigan Wildcats. The team did not continue such success in the first game of their second round session with the No. 5 Michigan Wolverines after a 5-1 defeat in Ann Arbor on Friday night.

Though Andrew Hammond posted a second 35-plus save performance, the offense sputtered scoring only once in sixty minutes . Bryce Williamson (Seba Beach, Alberta) tallied the lone Bowling Green goal at 4:07 of the third period, cleaning up in front of the net as he had done in the double-overtime victory last weekend. James McIntosh put a shot on goal bouncing off the pillow of U-M goaltender Shawn Hunwick. Williamson toed the top of the crease and chipped the puck into the Wolverine cage to cut into a 4-0 lead early in the third period. An assist was also credited to Bobby Shea (Harrison Twp., Mich.) on the score.
Michigan scored the games' first four goals including two in the first period. David Wohlberg notched his 15th goal of the season at 9:54 of the first period. Wohlberg received a pass from linemate Carl Hagelin and went top-shelf, glove-side on BGSU goaltender Andrew Hammond (Surrey, British Columbia) to gain the opening advantage. Chris Brown followed suit later in the period recording a tip-in goal while U-M was on the power play. Brown stationed himself on the far post and redirected a shot from Jon Merrill into the cage to give Michigan a 2-0 lead to take into the first intermission.
The Wolverines added one more goal in the middle stanza when Scooter Vaughan took advantage of a two-on-one opportunity in transition. Making a move inside the slot to avoid a BG defender, Vaughan ripped a shot high and to Hammond stick-side, beating the sophomore and giving the hosts a 3-0 lead.
Lindsay Parks of Michigan opened the third period with a goal scored directly off of a faceoff 42 seconds into the period and Luke Moffatt rounded out the scoring with a backhanded effort from the top of the point that sailed in and put the Wolverines up 5-1, a score that stood through the end of the game.
Hammond finished with 36 saves on the day on 41 shots against. He had made 32 saves through the first two periods. Williamson's goal was his fifth of the season and third in his last four games. He also lead the team with six shots taken, Friday night.
Bowling Green finished with 24 shots on goal to Michigan's 41 on the night. The Falcons went 0-for-5 on the power play in game one and limited Michigan to only one power-play goal on seven attempts.
The Falcons and Wolverines will return to Yost Ice Arena on Saturday night for game two of the series, beginning at 7:35 p.m. Bowling Green will need to win both games two and three to advance to “The Joe” and the conference semi-final round.
