Bowling Green fell to the Dayton Flyers, 13-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Red-shirt junior Matt Malewitz tossed his strongest outing since undergoing surgery in 2009, leaving the Falcons in a winnable situation as he exited in the seventh inning of Wednesday afternoon's game against the University of Dayton. The Falcon bullpen surrendered ten runs from that point on and the Falcons dropped their second weekday contest this week, this time to the Flyers, 13-2.

The lefty from Grand Rapids, Mich. lasted a season-high 6.1 innings on the hill in his third start of the season, exiting with two men on in the seventh inning. Malewitz (0-2) quietly struck out six Flyer hitters, including two in the fifth frame and at least one in five of his six full innings of work. Before allowing two hits in the seventh, he had allowed only four in his six innings prior. He finished allowing three runs on six hits and a walk.
He left two men on when he left with one out in the seventh inning when the bullpen went to work. With the game tied at one since the end of the first inning, Dayton catcher Josh Jeffery drove in two runs on a single to centerfield off of freshman Ben Singer (Midland, Mich.), officially closing the book on Malewitz. Singer allowed three singles plus a walk and had three of the five runs scored in the seventh inning credited to his line before Ross Gerdeman (Fort Jennings, Ohio) entered to end the inning.
Gerdeman's success ended there as UD's Jonathan Castine began the eighth inning with a solo home run to right field. The Flyers scored six more times before the innings end. Of the eight hits that inning for Dayton, five were singles and Castine had two for extra bases. Between Gerdeman and Levi Fisher (Bryan, Ohio), the pair allowed seven runs to jump out to a 13-2 lead.
Nick Bruns (St. Henry, Ohio) tossed a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one Flyer batter.
Until their last at bat in the ninth, the Falcons had accumulated only three hits after three trips through the batting order. None of the six total hits registered by the Falcons resulted in a run being driven in.
Bowling Green scored its runs in the first and last innings of the game. Their first was scored on a double play turned by Dayton scoring Frank Berry (Virginia Beach, Va.) from third after he reached on a fielding error. The final run was scored in the ninth when Ryan Schlater tagged up from third on a sacrifice fly by Alex Davison (Grand Ledge, Mich.). Dayton starting pitcher Bryce Lahrman threw four innings, limiting the Falcons to one run (unearned) and two hits, striking out and walking three.
The loss brings Bowling Green's overall record to 11-18 on the season. They have now lost their last four weekday games they have played and four out of five after their spring break trip to Winter Haven, Florida.
The Falcons prepare now for a crucial conference series with their arch-rivals from the Glass City, the Toledo Rockets. Bowling Green is currently tied for second place in the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division with the Miami RedHawks with a 5-4 conference record. The Falcons and Rockets begin their three-game set at home on Friday, April 15 at 3 p.m. at Warren Steller Field.
