Falcons Dismantle Eastern Michigan in 13-5 Win
April 02, 2011 | Baseball
The offense came alive for BGSU in their 13-5 victory over Eastern Michigan, Saturday afternoon.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Falcon offense carried over its productivity from Friday's ninth inning score-fest and scored 13 times in their game two win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon. Braving the elements and weathering a 20-minute rain delay, Bowling Green was not deterred from its offensive barrage that it put on the visiting Eagles, outscoring EMU 13-5 in the Falcon win.

Most of the damage Bowling Green administered occurred between the fifth and seventh innings when they scored 11 of their 13 runs. Bowling Green posted a five spot in the fifth inning capped off by a two-RBI double by co-captain Frank Berry (Virginia Beach, Va.) and a three-run home run by freshman Andrew Kubuski (Elyria, Ohio).
Leading 2-1 going into the top of the fourth inning, Eastern Michigan's Ben Magsig hit a two-run homer over the right center field fence to regain the advantage, 3-2. The lead did not last long before Bowling Green began its offensive onslaught with its five-run fifth inning.
The Falcons loaded the bases after singles from Matthew Pitzulo (Poland, Ohio) and Alex Davison (Grand Ledge, Mich.) added to a walk administered to Ryan Schlater (St. Paris, Ohio). Berry then hit a deep fly ball to right field and made good for a double, scoring two runs on the hit and giving the lead back to Bowling Green. Kubuski then stepped to the plate and on his first offering from EMU starter Corey Chaffins blasted a three-run shot over the right field fence, extending the Falcon lead to 7-3.
In the sixth, Eastern Michigan put two runs on the board before Bowling Green responded with two runs of their own. The Falcons did so courtesy of a two-run home run hit by Ryan Schlater. The senior took a 1-2 pitch and went opposite way, lining it into the trees beyond the right field fence and making the score 9-5 at that point.
Four more Falcon run crossed home plate in the seventh inning, widening the scoring margin beyond reach of the Eagles for good. Andrew Kubuski walked to lead off the inning. On an attempt to move Kubuski over, Logan Walker (Richmond, Va.) laid down a sacrifice bunt that Eagle pitcher Collin Taylor fielded and decided to go to second base for the force out but his throw was in the dirt and bobbled by Leonard at second base, allowing Kubuski and Walker to reach base safely. A second walk to Patrick Martin (Oregon, Ohio) loaded the bases before Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.) emptied them with a base-clearing double to the left center field gap, scoring three runs. Berti then stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Clay Duncan (Norwalk, Ohio), enlarging the lead what would become a final, 13-5.
Nick Bruns (St. Henry, Ohio) had strong outing in the win, his second of the season. He lasted 5.1 innings and allowed five runs while striking out seven hitters and walking none. Four of his seven strikeouts were recorded in the first and second innings. Ross Gerdeman (Fort Jennings, Ohio) finished the game with 3.2 innings of work, earning him the save (1). He allowed only one base hit against the 11 batters he faced, striking out three and allowing no runs.
Leading the way offensively was Jon Berti who had his second straight three-hit and three-RBI game. It was also his fourth multi-hit game in his last five outings. His 3-for-5 day helped extend seven game hit streak. Berti has now hit safely in 16 of the 18 games he has played in this season.
The Eagles (17-10, 4-1 MAC) and Falcons (9-12, 3-2 MAC) will meet for the final time this weekend on Sunday at Warren Steller Field (Bowling Green, Ohio). The rubber match will begin at 1 p.m. with Charles Wooten (1-3) taking the hill for the Falcons.
