APRIL HAS BEEN KIND TO SCHLATER
Through the senior's first 18 games, the Johnny Bench Award nominee had batted only .212 on the season. Since the turn of April, he has raised that average over 80 points to .286 over the last 17 games. He just had an eight-game hit streak snapped going 0-for-1o in a doubleheader versus Ohio but came back with a 3-for-3 performance in the series finale win. He has hit safely in 14 of the last 19 games with multiple hits in five of those. He also currently leads the team with four home runs, three of which have been hit this month. Schlater is hitting .343 and slugging .522 for the month of April, both second-best on the team.
HITTING WELL IN MAC PLAY
Through 15 conference games this season, the Falcons have a 8-7 record but have been hitting very well against the competition. Collectively, the Falcons have a .307 batting average as a team (compared to their .276 clip overall). They have collected double-digit hits in 10-of-15 MAC games and missed double digit hits three times by one base knock. Nine of their 15 team home runs have come in MAC play.
HITTING STREAKS OPEN AND CLOSE
Two Falcons had eight-game hit streaks end this past weekend versus Ohio. C/OF Ryan Schlater and OF Andrew Kubuski both have matched Jon Berti's season-high for consecutive games with a hit and look to surpass that this weekend against Ohio. After having their snapped, 3B Frank Berry kept his streak going notching hits in his last four contests and keeping what now is a nine-game hitting streak alive. That is now a new career high for the senior and ties a team high for longest ongoing streak.
SINGER WITH A “K”
Freshman Ben Singer had a commendable streak snapped in his relief appearance on April 24 against OU. Previous to that day he had accumulated at least one strikeout in every one of his ten relief appearances to that point. After that game, he returned to form striking out three in three innings against CMU on April 26. He has totaled 18 strikeouts in 12 appearances, spanning 18.0 innings. He had a season-high three strikeouts in one inning against Air Force (3/12). He currently has a 5.00 earned run average and a 0-4 record.
YA DON'T SHAY?!
Freshman Jeremy Shay stepped in as the team's designated hitter over the last five games and has seen some success at the plate. After notching only eight hits through 37 at-bats previous to last week, Shay has gone 5-for-12 (.416) over his last five games, including four runs scored, two RBI and three doubles. He struck out only once comparing to walking three times.
FALCONS EARN MARQUEE WIN OVER BUCKEYES
Though non-conference play hasn't been extremely kind to the Falcons all season long (7-14), the team pulled off a spotlight win over Ohio State University on Wednesday (April 20), 5-4. Behind the pitching of Matt Malewitz and a bullpen that pitched three effective innings, the Falcons won the middle innings, scoring five times between the third and fifth frames from all around the order.
