The Falcons' bats were magical, knocking out eight runs on 12 hits at The Stell today.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- To keep their arms, legs and bats warm the Falcons hosted the conference leader of the Horizon League Wright State Raiders on Wednesday afternoon. The non-conference warm up served the team well in the Falcons' 8-5 victory at Warren Steller Field. Matt Malewitz set the team up for success with his fourth consecutive strong start and was complemented by an offense the knocked out 12 hits on the day.

The Falcons ran up all eight runs on Wright State starting pitcher Joey Hoelzel before he was removed from the game. Bowling Green tagged him for nine hits through 3.1 innings. Matt Pitzulo (Poland, Ohio) and Frank Berry (Virginia Beach, Va.) each had two hits against Hoelzel in the first three innings of the game. Berry finished with three hits and a run batted in while Pitzulo scored twice, adding to his stat line.
Pitzulo led off a four-run second inning with one of his two singles and advanced to second base on a single by Patrick Martin (Oregon, Ohio). After the play ended, Wright State first baseman Jake Hibberd tossed the ball back to Hoelzel but the throw trickled away far enough to allow both base runners to advance one base. Logan Walker (Richmond, Va.) was hit by a 1-0 pitch from Hoelzel and his control further troubled him when he walked Matt Vannett (Bowling Green, Ohio) to force a second run home. Back-to-back singles by Frank Berry and Alex Davison (Grand Ledge, Mich.) plated two more runs to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead.
A two-run triple in the third by the Raider's Tristan Moore cut the lead in half but that margin was short lived after the Falcons equaled that total in their half of the third inning. Logan Walker plated two runs with a single through the middle of the infield, scoring Pitzulo and Clay Duncan (Norwalk, Ohio) after they led the inning off with singles.
With the score 6-2, BGSU added two more runs in the fourth on RBI hits from Ryan Schlater (St. Paris, Ohio) and Duncan. Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.) was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off and then scored when Schlater found the right field corner with a rope down the line. The hit turned into a triple for the senior, scored Berti and was the last batter Hoelzel faced before being lifted. Two batters later, Duncan found a hole through the right side of the Raider infield to extend the lead to six.
Malewitz threw five strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out a trio of Wright State hitters before giving way to Ben Singer (Midland, Mich.). In his lone inning of work, Singer struck out two Raider hitters, extending his streak of consecutive appearances with a strike out to 14 games. He now has 21 punch outs on the year.
Ethan McKenney (Defiance, Ohio) allowed two runs, both unearned. With a man on and two outs, Alex Davison dropped a deep fly ball in right field to allow Hibberd to move to third on the play. After another pitching change, Hibberd and Moore both scored on a two-RBI single by Ryan Ashe to make the score 8-4. They added one more run, also unearned, in the top of the ninth. Mike Frank (Maumee, Ohio) closed the door on the Raiders, striking out Ashe to end the game.
Bowling Green (18-26, 10-11) will next play host to No. 30 Kent State for a three-game set at Warren Steller Field. The series begins on Friday, May 13 at 3 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday's games both beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday serves as Senior Day. All five BGSU seniors will be honored for their contributions toward the Falcon baseball program and both teams will dawn their retro uniforms.
