Home runs by Jeremy Shay (Garden City, Mich.) and Matt Vannett (Bowling Green, Ohio) accounted for half the Falcons' scoring on Friday afternoon with Shay's blast helping Bowling Green jump out to an early 3-1 lead at the end of the first inning. With a walk and single preceding Shay, the freshman connected with a 1-1 pitch that sailed over the right center field fence, scoring Matt Pitzulo (Poland, Ohio) and Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.).
Bowling Green starter Cody Apthorpe (Windham, Ohio) rolled through the second inning with ease, retiring the side in order. The sophomore allowed two runs in the third through a trio of one-out base hits from the top of the Kent State lineup. In the fourth inning he faced four batters, retiring one. Apthorpe (5-6) hit one batter, had one reach on a fielding error, allowed a single and walked home a run before being relieved by Mike Frank (Maumee, Ohio). Frank lasted one-third of an inning but allowed the remainder of Apthorpe's runners left on base and an additional three runs to score before being relieved.
The Falcons (18-27, 10-12) brought the game back to within four runs in the seventh putting a three-spot up in the home half of the inning. Down 12-5, BGSU put runs on the board courtesy a RBI single by Jon Berti, a wild pitch that allowed Frank Berry to score and after walking the next two hitters an additional walk forced home a third Falcon run. The bases remained loaded but seven and eight hitters Patrick Martin (Oregon, Ohio) and #T.J. Losby# (Defiance, Ohio) were retired to end the inning.
Ben Singer (Midland, Mich.) kept BGSU in the game with four innings of relief that ended in the eighth. He finished having allowed three runs on six hits in his longest outing as a Falcon. The freshman turned it over to Ethan McKenney (Defiance, Ohio) but the freshman struggled and allowed four runs in the ninth after recording the last out of the eighth inning. Levi Fisher (Bryan, Ohio) finished the top of the ninth off striking out two and allowing one single in the process.
Matt Vannett provided some life off of the bench in the Falcons' last at bat hitting a two-run home run with two outs. Following a pinch-hit single by Patrick Lancaster (Woodhaven, Mich.), Vannett hit his first career home run a mile over the left field fence to give the Falcons a double digit run total for the game. Casey Wilson earned his second save of the season after entering the game in the seventh inning extinguishing the BGSU threat with the tying run on-deck and finished the game for Kent State.
Bowling Green and Kent State (35-13, 18-4) will return to Warren Steller Field for a 1 p.m. game two start time with Nick Bruns (So., RHP, 3-3, 6.79) will face off against Kyle Hallock (Sr., LHP, 8-4, 1.92) on Saturday.
Sunday's game will be preceded by Senior Day recognitions for the five members of the Falcons playing in their final home game of their collegiate careers. Frank Berry (Virginia Beach, Va.), Clay Duncan (Norwalk, Ohio), Dan Parsons (Strongsville, Ohio), Ryan Schlater (St. Paris, Ohio) and Charles Wooten (Elmore, Ohio) will be honored pregame and both teams in their throwback uniforms as part of a tribute to the long-lasting history of both universities' baseball programs.
