Last Weekend
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated Colgate University Friday night, dropping the Raiders by a score of 3-1. Sophomores Dajon Mingo, Cam Wojtala and senior Bobby Shea all scored for the Falcons, marking their largest goal output of the season. Senior Andrew Hammond started the contest, but gave way to freshman Tommy Burke after suffering an injury at the start of the first period. Burke stopped 24-of-25 shots in his first collegiate game, giving him his first career win for the Orange and Brown.
The Falcons lost to Colgate Saturday night, dropping a 4-2 decision to the Raiders in the second game of the road series. Freshman Mark Cooper and Sophomore Ryan Carpenter scored for the Falcons, while freshman Tommy Burke stopped 23-of-27 shots in his first career start.
Streaks Over
Dajon Mingo and Adam Berkle failed to register a point in the Falcons' 4-2 loss Saturday, putting an end to their four-game point streaks. Berkle's streak set a career high, breaking his previous best of three games, set on two different occasions last season. Sophomore Ryan Carpenter also opened last season with a four-game point streak. Carpenter and Dan DeSalvo each recorded five-game point streaks last season, sharing the team high for the year.
Short-Handed Goals
The Falcons allowed a short-handed goal to Colgate Saturday night, marking their third short-handed goal allowed this season. Bowling Green allowed a total of three short-handed goals in 2011-12.
Introducing Tommy Burke
Senior Andrew Hammond started the contest Friday, but gave way to freshman Tommy Burke after suffering an injury at the start of the first period. Burke stopped 24-of-25 shots in his first collegiate game, giving him his first career win for the Orange and Brown. Burke's win marks the first freshman goaltender to earn a win for Bowling Green since Nick Eno, in a 5-3 victory against RIT on Oct. 19, 2007.
Earning The Start
Burke started Saturday's contest, allowing four goals on 27 shots. Burke's start marked the first time since Feb. 19, 2011 (Nick Eno) that a goaltender besides Andrew Hammond started a game for the Falcons.
Welcome Back Wally
Junior Andrew Wallace's assist on the first Falcon goal Friday night marked his first point of the season, and first since March 26 against Michigan in the playoffs last year.
Positive Results
Five Falcons are currently in the plus category for the season, led by sophomore Mike Sullivan with a plus -3. Junior Andrew Wallace is second with a plus -2, while Dajon Mingo, Jose Delgadillo and Rusty Hafner carry a plus -1 rating. At the end of last season, only three Falcons (DeSalvo, Carpenter and Kucera) finished with a positive on-ice rating.
The Faceoff Dot
As a team, the Falcons are only winning 46.8 percent of their draws, down from 49.1 percent last year. Andrew Wallace has once again been the best in the early part of the year, winning 62.4 percent of the time. Cam Wojtala ranks second with a 47.8 winning percentage, with Ryan Carpenter (41.2 percent) and Dan DeSalvo (33 percent) rounding out the top centermen.
Colgate Earns A Win
The Falcons' 4-2 loss to Colgate Saturday night marked the first win for the Raiders in the all-time series. Bowling Green now leads the all-time series 6-1-1.
DeSalvo Earns Two
Sophomore Dan DeSalvo registered two assists in Saturday's 4-2 loss to Colgate Saturday night, marking his first multi-point game of the season, and first multi-assist game of his career. DeSalvo's multi-point game was his first since March 19, 2011, when he recorded a hat trick in the series-clinching game against Ferris State in the CCHA playoffs.
Special Teams
Coming into the series with Colgate, the Falcons had recorded a power-play goal in every game of the season. Bowling Green was scoreless on the power play during the entire weekend, marking the first time this season the Falcons had been held without a power-play goal in back-to-back games.
Sullivan's Assists
Sophomore Mike Sullivan has already recorded three assists this season, matching his total from 2011-12. Combined with his three assists, Sullivan finished last year with one goal for four points.
