Ann Arbor, Mich. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to Michigan Wednesday night, falling to the Wolverines by a score of 3-1 at Yost Ice Arena. Senior Bobby Shea scored the lone Falcon goal, while senior Andrew Hammond (1-6-1) turned away 35-of-38 shots in the loss. Both teams were held scoreless on the power play, with the Falcons going 0-for-3 and the Wolverines going 0-for-4 in the contest.
Michigan dominated the shot department in the opening frame, outshooting the Falcons by a 12-5 margin. Despite being outshot, Bowling Green lit the lamp first, coming off the stick of Shea at even strength.
In the closing seconds of the first, the Falcons moved the puck around the Wolverine zone. Sophomore Adam Berkle took control, and sent the puck towards Shea at the point. Shea fired a shot on net, beating Michigan goaltender Steve Racine. The goal marked Shea's third tally of the season, and gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead with two seconds left in the opening period.
Despite the momentum gained at the end of the first, Michigan came out on fire in the middle frame. The Wolverines rattled off three-straight goals in the second period, taking a 3-1 lead over the Falcons.
Michigan's AJ Treais started the scoring flurry for the Wolverines, netting his league-leading ninth goal of the season at 4:23 of the second. Wolverines Alex Guptill and Justin Selman followed with goals at 13:01 and 17:12, respectively, to cap Michigan's three-goal second period rally.
Both goalies were perfect in the final frame, securing a 3-1 victory for Michigan over the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green was perfect on the penalty kill in the contest, snapping a five-game streak in which the Falcons had allowed a power-play goal. Prior to Wednesday, the last time Bowling Green did not allow a power-play goal was Nov. 2, a 1-0 win against Michigan State on the road.
The loss pushes the Falcons' current losing streak at Yost to six games, with Bowling Green's last win coming on Nov. 20, 2009, a 4-2 victory.
The loss drops Bowling Green's overall record to 2-9-3, with a record of 1-6-2-1 in CCHA action. The win pushes Michigan's record to 5-6-1 overall, with a record of 3-5-1-1 in conference play.
The Falcons do not hit the ice again until Dec. 7, when they fly to Fairbanks, Alaska to battle the Nanooks on the road.
