BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost a close game to Northern Michigan Saturday night, falling to the Wildcats 2-0. The Falcons were shut out for the fifth time this season, while Junior Andrew Hammond stopped 21-of-22 shots in the loss.
The first period was a mirror match for the Falcons and Wildcats, as neither team could score on ten shots a piece in the opening frame.
The first goal of the contest came on the power play at the 4:12 mark of the second period. Freshman Mitch Jones floated a wrist shot from the point past Hammond for his fourth goal of the year, giving the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.
Bowling Green pressured Northern Michigan throughout the remainder of the contest, outshooting the Wildcats 21-13 in the final two periods of play.
The Falcons were unable to break through Northern Michigan goaltender Jared Coreau for the remainder of the game however, and eventually surrendered an empty-net goal to push the score to 2-0.
The loss drops Bowling Green's record to 9-18-5 overall, with a record of 4-16-4-3 in CCHA action. The win improves Northern Michigan's record to 14-10-6 overall, with a record of 9-9-6-3 in conference play.
The Falcons hit the ice again next weekend, facing off against Ferris State on the road. The Falcons look to avenge an early season sweep to the Bulldogs at the BGSU Ice Arena earlier this season (Nov. 4-5).
