Last Weekend
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost a close game to Notre Dame Friday night, falling to the Fighting Irish 2-1. Freshman Ted Pletsch scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while junior Andrew Hammond stopped 25-of-27 shots in the loss.
The Falcons defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3-2 Saturday night, splitting the weekend series in South Bend. Freshman Ryan Carpenter netted two third period goals, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 20-of-22 shots in the win. Sophomore Cam Wojtala also scored for Bowling Green.
Hello Teddy
Pletsch's tally Friday night breaks a personal four-game goal drought, dating back to the Falcons' shootout win against Ohio State (Jan. 7) at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Watch Out For T.J.
Tynan's goal Friday night and assist Saturday night gives him five points in four games against the Falcons this season, including three assists in two games in Bowling Green.
Seeing Green
The 3-2 Bowling green win Saturday night snaps Notre Dame's six-game winning streak against the Falcons. The last time Bowling Green beat the Irish was Nov. 5 of last year, when the Falcons defeated Notre Dame 3-2 at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Carpenter Takes The Lead
Freshman Ryan Carpenter's assist Friday night gives him 11 on the year, giving him sole possession of the team lead. Carpenter's assist Friday night marked his first point since Jan. 20, a Falcons 3-1 win at Alaska.
Finally Getting The Win
Junior Andrew Hammond is now 1-4-0 in his career against Notre Dame, collecting his first career victory against the Irish Saturday night. Hammond now has a 2.44 goals-against-average and a .913 save percentage in his career against Notre Dame. Hammond now has nine wins this season, a career high.
Shots For Days
The Falcons generated 24 shots on goal in Saturday night's game, marking the first time this season the Falcons have outshot Notre Dame.
Power Play Struggles
Bowling Green is currently on a five-game power-play goal drought. The Falcons have not recorded a power-play goal since Jan. 20, when they defeated Alaska 3-1 on the road.
One And Done
Since the Falcons four-goal output against Miami (Nov. 19), Bowling Green has failed to hit the four-goal mark again this season. In 16 games since, the Falcons have been held to one goal or less 11 times, including back-to-back shutout losses to Alaska-Fairbanks.
Two Goal Effort
Carpenter's two goal effort Saturday night is a career high, and puts his season total at eight, passing sophomore Bryce Williamson (7) for the team lead.
Welcome Back
Carpenter's goals snapped a personal 15-game goal drought, dating back to the Falcons 4-4 regulation tie against Miami (Nov. 19).
Second Coming
The last Falcon to score two goals in a game was junior Bobby Shea, in a 3-3 regulation tie against Western Michigan (Dec. 9) at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Doing The Splits
Bowling Green has split the last three weekends, securing wins against Alaska-Fairbanks, Western Michigan and Notre Dame. The three conference wins put the Falcons CCHA win total at four, passing last year's total (3).
First And Foremost
The Falcons win Saturday night against Notre Dame marks only the second time this season Bowling Green has secured a victory after giving up the first goal. The Falcons are now 2-13-3 when allowing the first goal. The only other Bowling Green win this season when allowing the first goal came last Saturday, when the Falcons defeated Western Michigan 2-1.
Game Winner
Freshman Ryan Carpenter now has two game-winning goals this season, tying him for the team lead with fellow freshman Adam Berkle.
Berkle's Helpers
Freshman Adam Berkle's two-assist night against Notre Dame Saturday ties his career high for points and assists in a game. Berkle recorded two assists against Canisius (Nov. 12) earlier this season.
The Last Time
This weekend's matchup against Northern Michigan marks the first meeting between the teams since the Falcons defeated the Wildcats in the first round of the CCHA playoffs last year. Bowling Green lost the first game of the series, but pulled off two-straight wins to advance in the playoffs. The win made Bowling Green the first bottom seed in CCHA history to win a best-of-three series. Bowling Green went 3-3-1 against Northern Michigan (including the playoffs) last season, including a record of 0-1-1 at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Here is a look at Bryce WIlliamson's series-ending goal in double overtime against Northern Michigan last season. The Falcons went on to play Michigan in the second round, falling in two games.
Taming The Wildcats
Junior Andrew Hammond has a record of 2-3-1 against Northern Michigan, including a shutout in last year's playoff series. Hammond has a 2.47 goals-against-average with a .908 save percentage against the Wildcats in his career.
Taming The Wildcats Part Two
Sophomores Jake Sloat and Brett Mohler are tied for the most career points against Northern Michigan on the current roster, with five each. Sophomore Bryce Williamson has recorded the most goals, with three.
Scouting Northern Michigan
Senior Tyler Gron leads the way for Northern Michigan offensively, registering 32 points on the year. Gron's point total ranks second in the CCHA behind Notre Dame's T.J. Tynan. Gron was a CCHA Pre-Season Second Team selection, and is tied for the team lead in goals (14) and assists (18).
Sophomore Jared Coreau and senior Reid Ellingson have each started 14 games between the pipes for the Wildcats, with Coreau holding a significant edge in numbers. Coreau carries a record of 8-5-2, with a 2.17 goals-against-average, and a .930 save percentage. NMU has yet to record a shutout this season.
