Falcons Fall To Michigan 3-2 In Double Overtime
March 17, 2012 | Ice Hockey
BOXSCORE
DETROIT – On the first shift of double overtime, Michigan junior forward A.J. Treais stole the puck at the Bowling Green blue line, drew junior goalie Andrew Hammond out of the net with a delayed move and slipped a backhand pass into the crease for sophomore forward Luke Moffatt, who banged the puck home to give the Wolverines a 3-2 win and a trip to the CCHA Championship Final.
The Wolverines trailed, 2-1, with less than three minutes left in regulation, but sophomore forward Derek DeBlois stole a pass behind the Falcons' net and fed senior forward David Wohlberg at the top of the crease with a no-look, between-the-legs pass for the tying score.
Prior to the double-overtime winner, Hammond was the story of the game, making 55 saves, many of the spectacular variety.
Bowling Green scored the first goal of the game on the power play midway through the first period. Sophomore forward Cam Wojtala fired a shot from the right boards that caught Michigan senior goalie Shawn Hunwick off guard and freshman forward Ryan Carpenter jammed the loose puck in on the short side, 1-0.
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead six minutes into the second period when Hunwick misplayed a puck behind his net and it landed on the stick of freshman forward Ted Pletsch who fed Marc Rodriguez cutting to the net. The junior forward fired a wrist shot top shelf over Hunwick's left shoulder.
On the other end, Michigan continued to pepper Hammond with quality scoring chances but couldn't manage to get on the scoreboard. That changed in the waning moments of the second period, when Bowling Green failed to clear their zone and sophomore defenseman Jon Merrill flicked a puck from the point that short-hopped on the way to the net and past Hammond.
The pace of the game picked up in the third period and carried over into overtime as each team took turns rushing the puck and putting quality chances on the opposing goaltender. Hunwick stopped 35 shots in the win.
Ryan Carpenter's first period power play goal was his ninth point (3g, 6a) of this season's CCHA tournament. Carpenter leads his team with his season scoring line of 11-19-30.
This is the first overtime loss for Bowling Green in the CCHA tournament. They had previously defeated Ferris State in both of their overtime games in the second round.
Both Andrew Wallace and Ted Pletsch notched their first points of the postseason. Both were off of assists on Marc Rodriguez second period tally.
Goaltender Andrew Hammond set a personal record with 55 saves in the contest. Hammond tallied 54 saves against Ferris State in the second round of the CCHA tournament. The CCHA Tournament record is 61 saves, set by Marc Felicio of Ferris State in the 1988 quarterfinals.
The Falcons play Miami Saturday afternoon in the CCHA third-place game. The puck drops at 3:35 p.m.
