BOX SCORES: Game One Game Two
The Bowling Green State University baseball team was swept by Western Michigan in Saturday's doubleheader. With the losses, the Falcons drop to 8-14, 0-2 MAC. The Falcons and Broncos will conclude the series tomorrow afternoon.
Game One
The Falcons would jump out to an early lead in game one, taking a 2-0 lead on a Brian Bien single in the second. The runs scored after Logan Walker reached on a two out error, keeping the inning alive. Consecutive singles by Kubuski and Rait would allow Bien to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead on a two-run single up the middle.
Bowling Green would take a 3-0 lead in the fourth on a Brian Bien single, scoring Logan Walker. The lead would evaporate in the bottom of the fourth on a Bronco three-run home run.
Cody Apthorpe got the start for the Falcons, receiving a no-decision on the day. Apthorpe went five innings, allowing three hits and three runs. He walked four and did not strike out a batter. Ben Singer would relieve Apthorpe, going 2.1 innings, and allowing one run. Singer was tabbed with the loss.
The Broncos would take the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a two out RBI single, 4-3. The Falcons would have a chance to tie it in the ninth inning, but could only get a runner with two outs, and did not score a run.
With the loss, the Falcons fall to 8-13 on the season, and 0-1 in Mid-American Conference play.
Game Two
The Broncos jumped out to an early lead that they wouldn't relinquish in game two, defeating the Falcons 10-3. Western Michigan led 7-0 after three innings, scoring four in the first, one in the second, and two in the third, all charged to starter Ethan McKenney. McKenney only lasted two-plus innings in the game, allowing seven runs on nine hits. He was the loser, while Western Michigan starter Steve Laudicina got the win.
The Falcons would get two runs back in the fifth, on a Jake Thomas single. They would add one more in the eighth to get within 8-3, before allowing two more runs in the home half of the eighth, for the 10-3 final.
Besides McKenney, Jason Link, Jake Overbeck, Chris Miller, and Patrick Martin all appeared in relief, only allowing one earned run over the course of the final six innings.
The Falcons and Broncos will wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
