Kent State Wins Slugfest Over Falcons On Sunday
April 15, 2012 | Baseball
In a game that included 51 runs, 46 hits, nine errors, and 487 pitches, the Bowling Green State University baseball team fell to Kent State, 31-20, on Sunday afternoon. The game was played at Steller Field, with the duration being four hours and three minutes. With the win, Kent State improves to 20-15 overall, and 10-2 in MAC action. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 14-21 on the year, and 4-8 in MAC play.
The Flashes got off to a fast start in the game, as they would score ten runs in the first inning, as 15 batters came to the plate in the inning. Falcon starter Trevor Blaylock would only make it through 0.2 innings on the day, as he was roughed up for 8 runs on six hits. He wasn't helped by the defense, which made two errors behind him in the inning, making four of his eight runs unearned. The Flashes led 10-0 before the Falcons even came to bat.
The Falcons would not score in the bottom of the first, which was one of just five half innings that either team was held scoreless all afternoon. Each team was also retired one, two, three just one time on the day, as well.
After holding Kent State scoreless in the top of the second, the Falcons would jump onto the scoreboard with a four spot of their own. With the wind gusting to over 30 MPH on the afternoon, everyone at Steller Field could tell that this one was going to be a slugfest.
The Golden Flashes responded with four runs in the top of the third, but the Falcons came back with three of their own, making it 14-7 after just three innings.
Kent State would get five runs in each of the next two innings, but the Falcons wouldn't go away, either, as they scored one run in the fourth, and seven in the fifth to make it 24-15 after five innings.
The Falcons would get two more in the bottom of the sixth to creep to within seven, at 24-17.
The offenses would settle down, by Sunday's standards, over the final three innings, as Kent State would outscore the Falcons 7-3 from the seventh inning on to win the game 31-20. The Flashes outhit Bowling Green 25-21 in the game, while the Falcons committed five defensive errors, to Kent State's four.
The game was the second highest scoring game in Steller Field history, with 51 total runs. It stands only behind a 29-25 Falcon victory over Xavier on May 1, 2001. Kent State's run total of 31 runs only stands behind Ball State's 32 runs back on April 10, 2010.
In total, 24 runners were left on base, 17 extra base hits were accumulated, and 40 players were used.
Red-shirt sophomore Fred Sharp recorded his first career hit with his single up the middle in the ninth inning.
The Falcons return to action on Tuesday evening, when they travel to Dayton, Ohio for a battle with Wright State. Following that contest, the Falcons will travel to Oxford, Ohio for a weekend showdown with Miami University.
