The Bowling Green State University baseball team defeated Wright State on Tuesday night, 8-6. The loss was the second in a row for the Raiders after having won the previous 14. Wtih the win, the Falcons improve to 15-21 on the season.
After playing fourteen innings on Friday of last weekend and being apart of a 51 run game on Sunday, there was no question that the pitching staff was depleted entering Tuesday's game. The offense responded in the first inning, putting a four spot of the board to give sophomore right-hander, Chris Miller, confidence on the mound. Miller, who was getting his first start of the season on the mound, went three strong innings in the contest, picking up the win.
The offense tacked on another two runs for Miller in the second, as the Falcons would lead 6-2 after just 1.5 innings.
Brian Bien led off the game with a double to right centerfield. He would come around to score on a single by the very next batter, Logan Walker. The next batter, Andrew Kubuski, would lay down a sacrifice bunt that Wright State would throw into right field, allowing Walker to score from first, and Kubuski to advance to third on the play. T.J. Losby then tripled, and the Falcons led 3-0 after just four batters. In total, the Falcons got four runs on four hits in the inning, giving Miller a four run lead to work with.
Wright State would battle back for two in the bottom of the first, but Miller would work out of a bases-loaded jam to keep it at 4-2.
The Falcons would get both of the runs back in the top of the second inning, as Brandon Howard and Brian Bien led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Logan Walker would eventually hit a sacrifice fly to score Howard, while Kubuski would get an RBI single to score Bien.
Miller would surrender another WSU run in the bottom of the third, but he left with a 6-3 lead after three innings.
Jason Link would pitch the next 2.1 innings in relief, walking just one Raider. Link did not surrender a hit or a run on the mound on Tuesday night.
With the bullpen short, and a big weekend series at Miami looming, Coach Schmitz would turn to Ben Singer for the next five outs. Singer would only allow one WSU hit, while striking out two Raiders.
The Falcons would add two insurance runs in the sixth inning, the runs turning out to be crucial. T.J. Losby doubled home Kubuski and Howard in the sixth, giving the Falcons an 8-3 lead at the time.
Wright State would get three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Falcon closer Nick Bruns would come in to stop the bleeding, recording the final out of the eighth. He would set the Raiders down in the ninth, as well, for his fifth save of the season.
Chris Miller picked up his first win of the season, improving his season win-loss record to 1-0.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 15-21 on the season, while Wright State drops to 23-12 with the loss. The Falcons will now travel to Oxford, Ohio, for a weekend series with Miami beginning Friday. Friday's game is scheduled for 6 pm, while Saturday will begin at 3 pm, and Sunday at 1 pm. Both teams enter the weekend with identical 4-8 records in the Mid-American Conference.
