April 21, 2012 | Baseball
Box Score
The Bowling Green State University baseball team was shutout by Miami on Saturday afternoon, falling to the RedHawks 7-0. The Falcons struggled all afternoon to get anything going against Miami starter Shawn Marquardt. Despite collecting seven hits, the Falcons could never get a rally started to counter Miami.
Seven different Falcons had one hit apiece on the afternoon, with all of them being singles. The Falcons went one, two, three in four different innings against Marquardt, who went eight innings to pick up the win.
Eithan McKenney got the start for the Falcons, as he was unable to get through the fourth inning. The RedHawks got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, as four of the first five batters would reach base in the inning, leading to two runs.
Miami would extend its lead in the fourth, capitalizing on some Bowling Green defensive blunders for three runs. After a leadoff single, the next batter would lay down a sacrifice bunt, but was not retired on the play. The following batter would once again lay down what appeared to be a sacrifice bunt, but it was perfectly placed for an infield single. The defensive mistakes would lead to three runs for Miami in the inning.
Miami would tack on single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to extend their lead to 7-0.
Four times the Falcons would get the leadoff batter on in an inning, but were unable to capitalize on the afternoon, leaving six runners on base and hitting into two double plays.
With the win, Miami improves to 19-20 on the season, and 5-9 in the MAC. The Falcons fall to 16-22 on the year, and 5-9 in MAC play. Bowling Green is now in a tie for the eight-seed in the conference tournament, with Miami, Northern Illinois, and Ball State having identical 5-9 records in league play following Saturday's action.
The Falcons and RedHawks will meet at 1 pm tomorrow afternoon for the rubber-match of the series.
