Box Score
The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Miami University on Sunday afternoon, falling to the RedHawks, 5-2. The Falcons had opportunities early in the game to put some pressure on Miami starter Mac Thoreson, but they could not capitalize. With the win, Miami improves to 20-20 on the year, and 6-9 in MAC play. Bowling Green falls to 16-23 on the season, and 5-10 in Mid-American Conference action.
The Falcons got an early run in the first inning, as Brian Bien came around to score on T.J. Losby's RBI single with two outs. The next two Falcons would also reach base on singles, loading the bases for the Orange and Brown. Despite the four hits in the inning, BG could only push one run across the board, stranding the bases loaded in the first.
Patrick Martin was lights-out on the mound in the early going, striking out six of the first seven batters he faced in the game. He went four innings on the afternoon, allowing three runs. Martin struck out six batters in his outing, keeping the RedHawks off-balance for much of the afternoon.
The Falcons would have another chance to push a run across in the second inning, after Jake Thomas got on base via a two-out double. The next batter, Brian Bien, would hit a slow roller up the middle that the shortstop would field, but Bien would easily beat the throw to first. However, Jake Thomas would be thrown out at the plate as he tried to score all the way from second base on the infield hit.
Martin would get himself into some trouble in the bottom of the third inning, as he would walk and hit a batter with one out, putting RedHawks on first and second. After the runners advanced to second and third, respectively, on a groundout to second, Miami would get two straight singles with two outs to put three runs on the board and take a 3-1 lead.
RedHawk starter Mac Thoreson would settle in after the first two innings, as he scattered nine hits over the course of his seven inning outing.
The Falcons crept to within one run, at 3-2, in the top of the seventh, as Brandon Howard would score from third on a fielder's choice. Howard, who led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on an error by the Miami second baseman.
Miami would tack on two runs of insurance in the bottom of the eighth, as they had three straight hits after the first two batters were retired in the inning.
The Falcons would be set down in order in the ninth, as Matt Rosinski picked up his third save of the season for Miami.
Bowling Green outhit Miami 9-6 on the afternoon, but would leave eight runners on base in the three run loss.
The Falcons will travel to Columbus on Wednesday night for a matchup with Ohio State. Following that contest, the Falcons will welcome second place Ohio University to town for a three-game set. Bowling Green will enter the weekend one game back of the coveted eighth-seed for a berth in the MAC tournament.
