Falcons Down Ohio On Friday, 4-3

Box Score
The Bowling Green State University baseball team defeated Ohio University on Friday afternoon, defeating the Bobcats 4-3. The game moved quickly through the first 5.5 inning, until controversy slowed the game in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and the bases loaded for the Falcons in the bottom of the sixth, Brandon Howard flied out to right field. Patrick Lancaster and Andrew Kubuski would move up on the play, from second and third respectively. Kubuski's run would have given the Falcons a 4-0 lead, but the Bobcats appealed to second base, and Lancaster was ruled out for leaving early, and the inning ended with the Falcons leading 3-0.
After the controversial bottom of the sixth in which the Falcons were given no runs, Ohio would come out and get three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to tie the game at three.
The game would get interesting at that point, as the umpires would huddle up, pull out the rulebook, and rule that the Falcon run from the bottom of the sixth should have, indeed, counted. The run was added to the scoreboard, giving Brandon Howard the RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, Andrew Kubuski a run scored, and the Falcons a 4-3 lead.
Ohio coach Joe Carbone, interpreting the rulebook in a different manner, would place the game under protest from that time on—after the third out in the bottom of the sixth inning, at a 3-0 game.
The Falcon duo of Patrick Martin and Nick Bruns would end up closing out the game, keeping the score at 4-3. Nick Bruns would come on for the final out of the ballgame, recording his sixth save of the season.
The Falcons got off to a fast start in the game, as they would put a run on the board with two outs in the bottom of the first, courtesy of an Andrew Kubuski single to score Jeremy Shay.
Starter Matt Malewitz, who received the win, kept the Bobcats under control on the afternoon, allowing just three runs through 6.2 innings pitched. He scattered nine hits, struck out five, and did not walk a single Bobcat.
With a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, the Falcons would get three straight singles with one out to load the bases for Jeremy Shay. Shay would hit a fly ball to right field, scoring Brandon Howard on the play for a 2-0 lead. With T.J. Losby up, Jake Thomas would steal second base. On the throw to second from the Ohio catcher, Brian Bien would take off for home, giving the Falcons a double steal and a 3-0 lead after five innings.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 17-24 overall, 6-10 in the MAC. Ohio falls to 22-19 on the year, and 11-5 in the MAC. The two teams will meet at Steller Field on Saturday afternoon, at 1 pm, for game two of the three-game set.
Friday's game has been ruled as a FINAL, with the Falcons beating Ohio 4-3.
