Box Score
The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Akron, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Canal Park. Bowling Green led 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, but Akron would get three hits and three runs in the inning to come-from-behind for the victory. Akron improves to 12-17, 5-3 MAC with the win, while the Falcons fall to 11-19 overall, and 2-6 in the MAC with the loss.
Ethan McKenney kept Akron off-balance for much of the afternoon, keeping the Falcons in the game as the offense continued to struggle for the first six innings. The Falcons would snap a 17 inning scoreless drought in the seventh inning to give McKenney and the Falcons the lead. McKenney went 7.2 innings on the day, allowing just one run, while striking out five batters. He did not issue any walks on the afternoon.
Akron got a run in the third inning with a two out double, putting them on top, 1-0. The Falcons wouldn't respond until the seventh inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
In that seventh inning, Andrew Kubuski got things started with an infield single on a perfectly placed drag bunt down the first base line. That was followed by a Drew Kuns single and a Brian Bien sacrifice bunt, to put Falcons at second and third with just one out. Jeremy Shay would pinch-hit for Patrick Lancaster, taking advantage of the opportunity by ripping a double into the left centerfield gap to score both runners. Jesse Rait would then single up the middle, to put runners on the corners for Jake Thomas. Thomas would chase a pitch in the dirt for strike three during his at-bat, but the ball would get away from the catcher, allowing Shay to score, and Rait to advance all the way to third on the play.
McKenney's day would come to an end with a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning, as a line drive deflected off of him with two outs. Nick Bruns would come into the game, and record the final out of the eighth, closing the book on McKenney.
In the bottom of the ninth, Akron would see four players reach base on three hits, giving them three runs for the walk-off win.
The Falcons and Zips will conclude their series at Canal Park, tomorrow at 1 pm.
