Akron Beats Falcons On Walk Off For Second Straight Day
April 08, 2012 | Baseball
Box Score
For the second straight day, Akron defeated the Bowling Green State University baseball team in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning. On Sunday, Sam Watkins's two out single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Zips the 2-1 win. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 11-20 on the season, and 2-7 in Mid-American Conference play.
The three pitchers that threw on Sunday continued the weekend of strong pitching performances, but the offense continued to struggle. The Falcons were only able to manage four total runs in the three game series, and have only scored 27 runs in their nine MAC games.
Senior Patrick Martin got the start on the mound for the orange and brown on Sunday, going four strong innings of one hit baseball. As the afternoon wore on, he began to struggle with command, and was removed in the bottom of the fifth after walking the first two batters of the inning.
With Ben Singer on the mound, Akron would execute perfectly to get a run in the fifth. The first batter that Singer faced in the inning laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third with just one out. The next batter got the ball in the air for the sacrifice fly, and a 1-0 Akron lead.
Akron starting pitcher Alex Loftin would hold the lead until the top of the ninth, when the Falcon offense took advantage of some Akron mistakes to tie the ballgame up at one apiece.
T.J. Losby started the inning off with a single up the middle, and was sacrificed to second base on a bunt by Patrick Lancaster. With Losby at second base, head coach Danny Schmitz decided to get some speed on the bases with the tying run in scoring position, as he would send Jesse Rait to second base to pinch-run for Losby. After a strikeout, Brian Bien would come up with the game on the line. A passed ball during Bien's at-bat would move Rait over to third base, and a wild pitch on Bien's swing for strike three would get Rait home and tie the game at one.
After Nick Bruns had come on in relief of Ben Singer in the eighth inning, he would remain in the ballgame for the bottom of the ninth.
Bruns would set the first two hitters down in order, and it looked like the Falcons would get out of the inning and play extras for the second straight Sunday. However, Akron had different ideas, as Devan Ahart reached on an infield single, which brought up Sam Watkins. An errant pickoff throw would help Ahart get all the way to third base, and set up Watkins's walk-off single for the second straight day, giving the Zips a 2-1 victory.
The Falcons will head to University of Michigan for a midweek game on Tuesday night, with first pitch set for 6:05 pm.
