Box Score (Murray State 8 - BGSU 6)
MURRAY, Ky.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Murray State on Sunday afternoon, falling by a final of 8-6. With the loss, the Falcons are now 2-4 on the season.
The Thoroughbreds scored five runs in the first inning, thanks in large part to a series of defensive miscues in the inning. Murray State got just two hits in the inning, but three walks, an error, a wild pitch, and a passed ball allowed them to bat around.
Falcon starter Trevor Blaylock would settle in from there, keeping Murray State off the scoreboard in the second and third innings.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard thanks to an RBI single by Jeremy Shay in the third inning with two outs.
In the fourth, things looked bleak for the Falcons, as they only had one runner on with two outs. But, two-out singles by five-straight batters allowed the Falcons to score five runs, jumping ahead 6-5.
Murray State wasted no time regaining the lead, as they tallied three-straight one-out singles in the home half of the fourth. The Thoroughbreds led 7-6 after four innings.
Both pitching staffs settled in from that point on, as the Falcons could not crack the scoreboard for the remainder of the afternoon.
In the fifth, the Falcons had a golden opportunity to tie the game up, as they had two runners on, with two outs. A fly out to center would end the threat.
That started a streak of ten straight Falcons retired by MSU pitching, before a leadoff single by T.J. Losby in the ninth. Following a walk and two flyouts, pinch-hitter Alex Davison would keep the hope alive with an infield single down the third base line.
Murray State would get a groundout to end the game, keeping the bases loaded in the inning. For the game, the Falcons left 12 runners on base.
Bowling Green will return to action on Tuesday at Dayton, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
Notes
*Kyle Burkhardt made his first career start in the Orange and Brown, drawing two walks before being lifted for a defensive replacement in the sixth.
*The five-run fourth inning is tied for the most productive inning the Falcons have had this season. They also scored five runs in the second inning of opening-night at Western Kentucky.
*With two errors on Sunday, the Falcons have now committed 15 errors on the season.
