BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Missed opportunities were the story on Sunday afternoon, as the Bowling Green State University baseball team lost the series finale against visiting Akron. The Falcons committed five errors and left 11 runners on base in the 7-3 loss. The loss was the first for Bowling Green since April 7, as they had won six in a row heading into today's game. The Orange and Brown are now 13-20 (8-7 MAC) on the season.
The Falcons scored first in each game during the six-game winning streak, but on Sunday, the visiting Zips would jump out to the early lead. Akron would score a single run in the top of the second against Falcon starter Trevor Blaylock.
Blaylock came into the contest looking for his first win of the season. He would only last four innings, allowing three earned runs and walking five. Blaylock would exit the game with the Falcons trailing 3-1.
Bowling Green tied the game in the bottom of the third inning at one, as T.J. Losby singled home Jesse Rait to bring the Falcons even.
Despite the winning streak coming to an end on Sunday afternoon, Losby was a bright spot, accounting for five-of-12 hits on the afternoon. He went 5-for-5 in the contest with two RBI and one run scored. Following his performance on Sunday, Losby now leads the team with a .323 average.
Trailing 3-1 with a runner on first in the top of the fifth, Blaylock would give way to righty Jason Link. The first batter that Link faced would hit a dribbler back to the mound, but the throw to first would be errant, allowing the inherited runner to reach third on the play. The runner from third would score on a fielder's choice, and the Falcons trailed 4-1 at the midway point.
As they have during much of the winning streak, the Falcons would respond in the next half inning. With two outs and a runner on second in the bottom of the fifth, Losby would single to score Jeremy Shay. After advancing on the throw home, Losby would score on a Patrick Lancaster single into right-center field.
The Falcons had a golden opportunity to tie it in the bottom of the sixth, as Jake Thomas led off the inning with a double to left field. Thomas was another bright spot for the Orange and Brown on Sunday, recording three hits in his four at bats.
Brandon Howard would ground out to second base to advance Thomas to third, but the next two batters would also ground out, and Thomas would be stranded at third.
Akron would take advantage of the missed opportunity in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs on three hits and two Falcon errors. Reliever Ben Singer would minimize the damage, however, with a foul out and a fly out to keep the bases loaded.
The Zips would add an insurance run in the eighth, and the Falcons would leave two runners on in the bottom of the ninth to finish the game.
The Falcons now face a crucial stretch in their schedule, with just four Mid-American Conference series' remaining. Following midweek games at Xavier (Tuesday) and home against Wright State (Wednesday), the Falcons will travel to Kent State for a three-game series. That series will begin next Friday night, under the lights, with an expected first pitch of 6:05.
