Box Score
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Bowling Green has struggled much of the season to keep the opposition off the scoreboard in the first inning, and Sunday was no different as Eastern Michigan got to Falcon starter Trevor Blaylock for six runs in the top of the first. The early deficit would be too much to overcome, as the Falcons were defeated 13-5 at Steller Field.
Early walks often come back to haunt teams, as the Eastern Michigan leadoff man was walked to begin the game. Following a line out to right field, six of the next seven batters would reach base. Before you could settle in at Steller Field, EMU led 6-0. Jason Link would relieve Blaylock, getting the final out of the first inning.
Link was a bright spot for the Orange and Brown on Sunday afternoon, going 3.1 innings and allowing just one run.
Trailing 7-0 heading into the bottom of the second, the Falcons would finally cut into the lead with two runs in the home half, as a Brandon Howard triple brought home Jesse Rait, and Nick Glanzman's single scored Howard.
The Falcons would make it 7-3 in the bottom of the third, with Brian Bien scoring on a T.J. Losby sacrifice fly. Bien reached base to begin the inning with a perfectly-placed push bunt between the first and second baseman.
Eastern Michigan starter Paul Schaak would put the clamps on the Falcon offense from there, shutting the Orange and Brown down over his final two innings of work. Schaak picked up the win to improve to 3-1, pitching five innings and striking out five Falcon batters.
In the top of the sixth, the Falcon defense would end any hope of a comeback, committing two errors which led to three unearned runs. The Falcons have now committed 64 errors on the season, leading to the opposition capitalizing for 59 unearned runs.
BGSU would score their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Rait would begin the inning by reaching on a throwing error by the Eagles. Jeremy Shay would then send a drive over the right-centerfield wall for a two-run home run, cutting the lead to 10-5 at the time.
EMU would score three more runs in the top of the eighth, increasing the lead to the final margin at 13-5.
With the win, Eastern Michigan comes back to take the series over the Falcons, improving their record to 14-16 (4-5 MAC). BGSU drops to 7-19 (3-6 MAC) on the season with the setback. The Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon, taking on Ball State in a nonconference matchup in Muncie, Ind.
