About University of Alaska
The University of Alaska joined several other NCAA Division I programs in the newly-formed Western Collegiate Hockey Association for the 2013-14 season. The Nanooks play at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. The 'Nooks are coached by Dan Ferguson, who is in his sixth season at the helm of the hockey program. Under the leadership of coach Ferguson, Alaska have won four consecutive Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup titles, played host to four CCHA home playoff series and claimed five non-conference tournament titles.

The weekend series between the Falcons and Nanooks will mark the 54th and 55th time these two teams will play each other. Alaska holds a 25-22-6 all-time record against BGSU. The Falcons are 10-14-3 away from the BGSU Ice Arena against the Nanooks in program history, while the Orange and Brown are 11-11-3 playing in front of the Falcon faithful.
Weekend Review (Alabama Huntsville)
Game 1: HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team started the new year by defeating the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Friday night (Jan. 3), by a score of 7-0, tying a season-high in goals for the 2013-14 season in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association showdown. Playing in front of 1,560 fans at the Von Braun Center, the Falcons saw six different skaters score goals, while sophomore Tommy Burke (7-2-4) turned away all 22 shots faced earning his second career shutout. Game 2: HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Saturday night (Jan. 4), by a score of 4-1, completing a two-game sweep over the Chargers in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekend battle. Playing in front of 1,515 fans at the Von Braun Center, the Falcons saw four different skaters score goals, while sophomore goaltender Tommy Burke turned away 26-of-27 shots.

At BGSU Ice Arena (5000) this weekend, Bowling Green (11-9-4, 8-6-2 WCHA) will go up against Alaska (8-9-3, 5-8-1 WCHA), with puck drops at 7:07 pm ET both Jan. 10-11. This will be the only two-game series between the Falcons and Nanooks during the regular season. The Falcons, who won twice at Alabama Huntsville last weekend, are 4-1-1 over their last six conference games and have moved into sole possession of third place. Alaska, meanwhile, is coming off a home split against pre-season WCHA favorite Minnesota State and are 3-1-1 over their last five league skates.
WCHA In The Polls
Ferris State University dropped one spot in the latest United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) National Poll with a 15-3-3 overall record, after the poll was released Monday afternoon (Jan. 6). The Bulldogs are in first place in the conference with a 10-0-2 conference ¬¬record (22 points). Lake Superior State also remained in the top 20, sitting at 19th with an 11-8-1 overall record. Minnesota State (57) and Bowling Green State University (1) also received votes in the latest USCHO poll.
Offensive Success Against The Chargers
The Falcons showcased why they are ranked third in the WCHA in scoring (3.12 GPG) over the weekend against UAH. Bowling Green took the third best offense into the Von Braun Center and out-shot the Chargers 158-93, scoring 11 goals in two games against UAH. The 11-goal output is the most Bowling Green has scored over a weekend for the 2013-14 season. BGSU scored seven goals on Friday night, matching their largest goal output against an opponent this season in a single game. In all, the Falcons out-shot UAH 245-137 and outscored the Chargers 17-5 in four regular season games.
Falcons Against The Rest
Bowling Green have played nine games against a ranked opponent so far this season, coming away with a 1-6-2 record. All nine games have been on the road or on neutral ice, as the Falcons averaged 2.22 goals per game, while allowing 3.55 goals to nationally ranked opponents. Meanwhile, BG has gone 10-3-2 against non-ranked opponents, averaging 3.50 goals and only allowing an impressive 1.20 goals per game.
Positive Falcon Vibe
The Falcons finished last weekend with an impressive 15 skaters owning a positive on-ice rating against UAH. Falcons' Rusty Hafner (+5), Adam Berkle (+4), Dan DeSalvo (+4) and Ralfs Freibergs (+4) led Bowling Green in plus/minus from Jan. 3-4. For the season, Bowling Green has 15 skaters with a plus on-ice rating, compared to just seven skaters at this time a season ago.
Williamson's New Career Best
Bryce Williamson tallied two assists in the Falcons' 7-0 victory over the Chargers on Friday night. The senior forward's two helpers gave him 20 points on the year (9g, 11a), setting a new single season career-high for points, beating his previous-best 19 points set in the 2012-13 season.
DeSalvo Reaches 70
Dan DeSalvo recorded six points over the past weekend (2g, 4a) and put seven shots on goal against UAH. DeSalvo's assist in the second period at 3:58 to Brent Tate on Saturday night gave him 70 career points. DeSalvo is the first Falcon to reach the 70-point plateau since David Solway (31-42=73) in the 2010-11 season. On the year, DeSalvo has six goals and a team-leading 16 assists for 22 points in 24 games.
Leaders of the WCHA
Dan DeSalvo's big weekend propelled him to the top of the WCHA in overall point scoring. The junior forward is tied with Cody Kunyk (Alaska) and Garrett Thompson (Ferris State) with 22 total points in 24 games this season. Meanwhile, fellow teammate Ralfs Freibergs lit-the-lamp for the first time this season with a goal at the 5:53 mark in the second period on Friday night against UAH. The sophomore defenseman also added an assist in the game for his second multi-point game of the 2013-14 season. DeSalvo and Freibergs are first and second in the WCHA in assists scoring, with 16 and 15, respectively.
Burke Solid In The Net
Sophomore netminder Tommy Burke appeared in both games against UAH last weekend, backstopping the Falcons' two victories by turning away 48-of-49 shots, posting five shutout periods, and killed 5-for-5 UAH power-play chances to finish with a .979 save percentage over the weekend. Burke earned his second career shutout against UAH on Friday in as many tries, stopping all 22 shots he faced in the 7-0 win. On the year, Burke is 8-2-4 with a 2.30 GAA and a .918 save percentage.
Second Period Domination
Bowling Green outscored the Chargers last weekend 6-1 in the middle frame in two games. The Falcons now own a +11 goal differential for the season in the second period, averaging 1.25 goals to just 0.79 goals allowed. The Orange and Brown have also put 265 shots on goal in the middle frame compared to 241 for opponents, a +24 advantage. On the year, BGSU hold an impressive 9-3-0 record when heading into the third period with a lead.
Multi-Point Men
With one of their best offensive showings last weekend, the Falcons have five players score at least two points in consecutive games. Dan DeSalvo, who tallied six total points last weekend, has now totaled five games with at least two or more points on the year, with Bowling Green going 4-1-0 in those games. In fact, the team has gone a respectable 6-3-1 in 10 games where a players tallied two or more points.
Month of December
The hockey team ended the month of December with an overall record of 3-2-1, improving from a 2-1-1 mark a year ago. Overall, Bowling Green has improved their win total in each month this season compared to last, and has four more wins entering January.

Alaska Last Week: The University of Alaska spilt a pair of Western Collegiate Hockey Association games against Minnesota State University in Fairbanks, Alaska last weekend. The Nanooks scored three goals in the final period to down Minnesota State 4-2 in the first game of the two-game weekend set.
Alaska's goaltender Davis Jones turned awat 37-of-39 shots on the night to improve his season record to 4-3-1. Tyler Morley had a career-high three points in the victory with a pair of goals and adding an assist for his first multi-point game as a Nanook. Alaska were outshot 39-18 in the victory, which was the largest shot differential in an Alaska win this season.
The Mavericks capitalized on all their chances on Saturday night's victory in the WCHA series finale, using three goals in the final 10 minutes to take a 6-4 victory from Alaska at the Carlson Center. The Mavericks outshot the Nanooks 33-25, including 15-7 in the final period, which resulted in MSU's three goals.
With the series split, Alaska's overall record now sits at 8-9-3 overall, and 5-8-1 in league play. Meanwhile, Minnesota State stayed in second place in the WCHA with a 10-4-0 record, and 12-8-0 overall for the 2013-14 season.
