TOLEDO, Ohio—For the second consecutive day, Bowling Green State University overcame a deficit to defeat the University of Toledo. With their 5-3 win in 10 innings on Wednesday at Scott Park, the Falcons have swept the regular season series from the Rockets for the second straight season. With the win, Bowling Green improves to 12-17 on the season.
The Falcons managed just three hits through the first nine innings on the afternoon, but were able to scratch across three runs to force the game into extra innings at 3-3.
In the top of the 10th inning, Logan Walker would double to give the Falcons a base runner against Toledo reliever Adam Tyson. Walker would advance to third on a wild pitch before a walk was issued to Patrick Lancaster.
With runners on the corners and one out, Andrew Kubuski would pinch hit for Jesse Rait. He would hit into a fielder's choice, as Toledo was able to retire Walker on the play to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard. Despite the out, the Falcons still had two runners on for Brandon Howard.
On a 1-0 pitch, Howard would rip one into the right-centerfield gap, scoring both runners and winding up on third with a two-out, go-ahead triple for the Orange and Brown.
Trevor Blaylock, who pitched the final inning on Tuesday, would close out the Rockets to secure the victory. Blaylock went two innings on Wednesday, allowing just one UT hit.
The Falcon pitching staff was strong all afternoon, allowing just five hits and two earned runs. Tyler Anderson got the start, going three innings and allowing just two earned runs. He struck out four. Anderson was followed by Tony Landi, who struck out two batters and did not allow a hit in three scoreless innings of relief. Johnny Crawford also pitched in the game, shutting out the arch-rival Rockets in two innings of work.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard first for the second straight day, scoring a run in the top of the first as Jeremy Shay would score on a wild pitch. In the fourth, the Falcons would score another run on a wild pitch, as Patrick Lancaster would manufacture a run with his speed. The Orange and Brown then tied the game in the top of the seventh, as Brian Bien scored on a Losby sacrifice fly, a run that was unearned.
The Falcons will now turn their attention back to Mid-American Conference play, after both midweek games were considered nonconference matchups. Bowling Green will host Central Michigan (8-1 MAC) at Warren E. Steller Field this weekend. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:05 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday will begin at 1:05 p.m.
