Falcons Fall In Home Opener To Central Michigan
March 15, 2016 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team fell in its home opener at Warren E. Steller Field, 10-5, Tuesday (March 15) afternoon to Central Michigan University. The ballgame was a non-conference matchup. Cody Callaway and Riley Minorik hit their first-career home runs in the loss. The two home runs were also Bowling Green's first two on the season.
"I thought we came out, and were ready to play, and got off to a good start," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "But that third inning was the game. We allowed too many free base runners, and CMU did a good job at making us pay."
Bowling Green took a 4-0 lead with a four-run second inning, but Central Michigan came right back with a seven-run third, and never looked back.
CMU improves to 4-12 on the year with the win, while Bowling Green falls to 7-9. The Falcons were out-hit, 10-9, and committed one error to Central Michigan's zero.
Randy Righter and Greg Basalyga hit back-to-back doubles to open the four-run second. Callaway then hit a laser over the left-field fence with Basalyga on base to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. Kory Brown notched a two-out single to inch the Falcons' lead up to 4-0.
Bowling Green starter Mat Szabo pitched two hitless innings, but was knocked out of the game in the third when he walked the bases loaded. Szabo struck out three and walked five in his first-career start. BGSU needed three pitchers in the third, but Tyler Anderson, who entered after Trevor Farrell allowed four runs, settled the game back down and kept the Falcons in the ballgame.
In total, he allowed just one run on five hits over 3.2 innings of work. He struck out two and walked three. Minorik's homer to left pulled Bowling Green within two at 7-5, but CMU's run in the sixth – the only run allowed by Anderson – gave the visitors a three-run lead.
The score would stay at 8-5 until the ninth inning – due largely in part to Devin Daugherty, who continued his great start to the season. Daugherty logged 2.1 hitless innings, striking out one and walking two in the process.
However, Central Michigan put the game out of reach in the ninth by scoring two runs off Brad Croy to take a 10-5 lead. The Orange and Brown did put their first two runners on base in the bottom half of the ninth, but Sean Renzi set down the next three Falcon batters to secure the 10-5 victory for the Chippewas.
Basalyga was the lone Falcon with multiple hits on the day, as he finished the ballgame 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Callaway's two-run home run gave him his eighth and ninth RBI on the season, while Minorik's home run marked his second-career RBI. Minorik is now hitting .333 on the season. Brown stole his fourth base of the season in the contest, while catcher Justin Mott threw out his sixth would-be base stealer.
Bowling Green will now turn its attention to a back-to-back doubleheader with Western Michigan this weekend. The Falcons will play two games in Kalamazoo on Friday (March 18), before playing two more games back at Steller Field on Saturday (March 19). Friday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch, with Saturday's games scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m.
