EMERSON, Ga. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team had a four-game winning streak snapped by the Alabama State University Hornets on Wednesday afternoon, as Alabama State defeated the Falcons by a score of 11-3 at Lake Point fields.
Alabama State scored at least one run in five of the first six innings, including a four-run fifth inning, and two-run frames in the first, second and sixth.
"You are going to have games like these throughout the course of a long season," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We didn't execute in the three phrases today, but the test will come on Friday – to see how we respond."
After the Hornets scored two runs apiece in the opening two frames to take a 4-0 lead, Bowling Green got right back into the game with a three-run third.
Derek Drewes put runners at the corners with a one-out single. Drewes – who went 2-for-3 with a run scored – was the lone Falcon with multiple hits in the ballgame. Greg Basalyga then plated Randy Righter – who was hit by a pitch to open the inning – to put the Falcons on the board.
Later in the inning, with two outs and runners at second and third, Cam Daugherty stepped up to the plate, and promptly hit a two-run single into left that brought the Falcons within a single run at 4-3.
The ballgame was still in reach for Bowling Green into the fifth, as BGSU trailed by just a 5-3 mark. But Alabama State went on to score four runs in that fifth inning, before plating two more in the sixth, to put the game out of reach.
Bowling Green's other hits were registered by R.J. Williams, Logan Giddings and Dan Ferguson. The Falcons also had four pitchers – the final four pitchers that appeared in the contest – record scoreless outings.
Mat Szabo threw a scoreless seventh inning, while also notching a pair of strikeouts. Rob Zenas tossed a perfect eighth inning. And Kody Brown – who recorded two outs – and Trevor Farrell – who recorded one out – combined to throw a scoreless ninth.
In total, Bowling Green was out-hit, 13-7. Alabama State had five players with two RBI, and two players that recorded three hits. The Hornets had won five-straight games, prior to Bowling Green's 7-4 win over ASU on Tuesday night.
The Orange and Brown will have an off day tomorrow, before returning back to action in the Perfect Game Tournament on Friday with a game against Presbyterian College. The Falcons will then play a doubleheader on Saturday with games against Savannah State and Nebraska-Omaha. Bowling Green will then wrap up play in Emerson, Georgia by taking on Presbyterian College again on Sunday.
