OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was swept in doubleheader action on Sunday (April 10) at McKie Field. The Falcons lost the first game, 7-5, before losing in 12 innings by a score of 4-3 in the second game.
Â
"We battled hard throughout the day, but we never put together a complete game," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "I was proud of how we battled back in the second game, but overall, we weren't good enough this weekend."
Â
In the 12th inning, Miami led off the frame with a triple. Bowling Green then intentionally loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly won the RedHawks the game. Bowling Green falls to 11-21 (2-7 MAC) with the loss.
Â
Game two didn't start off well for the Falcons, as Miami plated one run over each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead, but Riley Minorik hit a two-run home run in the third to tie the ballgame.
Â
Minorik had himself quite the day. He belted a home run in both games of the doubleheader, finishing the day 4-for-9 with one double, two bombs, three runs scored and four RBI.
Â
Bowling Green starter Andrew Lacinak gave the Falcons 6.2 innings of two-run ball. The southpaw allowed just one earned run on six hits. Tony Landi went on to throw two scoreless frames in relief of Lacinak.
Â
Derek Drewes then gave Bowling Green a 3-2 lead with a pinch-hit, two-out single into left in the 11th inning, but Miami came right back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI of their own.
Â
Early on, game one was highlighted by an onslaught of offense for Miami that put that game out of reach. The RedHawks scored a run apiece in both the first and second, before knocking starter Zac Carey out of the ballgame with a four-run third.
Â
Carey lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing six runs on five hits. He trotted out to the hill for the third having allowed just two runs, but the Miami offense erupted for three extra-base hits and four runs in the fourth to take a six-run lead.
Â
The RedHawks hit a single, double, triple and home run in the frame. The inning was capped by a Gary Russo two-run home run that put Miami ahead by a score of 6-0.
Â
However, Bowling Green charged back into the ballgame with a four-run sixth. After loading the bases with one out, Cody Callaway and Riley Minorik worked back-to-back walks to make the score 6-2. An error on Miami's second basemen off the bat of R.J. Williams allowed two more runs to score, pulling the Falcons within two runs at 6-4.
Â
Riley Minorik – who finished the ballgame 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI – then pulled the Falcons even closer with a solo blast in the top of the eighth. Minorik's second-career bomb made the score 6-5.
Â
The Falcons wouldn't draw closer, however. Miami plated a huge insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, and Bowling Green came up empty in the ninth.
Â
The Falcons will return to Steller Field next week for four home games. Bowling Green will take on Dayton on Wednesday (April 13). First pitch of the midweek game is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. The Orange and Brown will then take on Ohio across April 15-17.Â
