YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost to Youngstown State University, 2-0, Wednesday (April 27) evening at Eastwood Park. Bowling Green was held to just five hits in the defeat.
"Our pitching staff did a great job," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "That's a really good sign, especially with how many different guys we've been using in midweek games. They gave us a chance, but our offense just wasn't there tonight. We need to quickly refocus with a big conference weekend ahead against Northern Illinois."
Bowling Green falls to 16-25 on the season with the loss, while Youngstown State improves to 9-26.
Youngstown State scored the only two runs of the ballgame in the bottom of the first, as the Penguins registered two hits and capitalized on a Bowling Green throwing error to take a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons had a huge opportunity to get on the board in the third, but Youngstown State pitcher Michael Semonsen pitched out of the jam. Matt Smith and Greg Basalyga registered back-to-back base hits, before Kory Brown worked a walk to load the bases. However, a fly out to center ended the threat.
With time running out in the ballgame, Bowling Green had another quality chance to break through in the eighth. With one out, Basalyga singled, moving Nick Glanzman – who singled to open the frame – to second. But consecutive strikeouts ended the inning.
Bowling Green's pitching staff gave the Falcons a chance, but the offense was held stymied throughout the course of the ballgame.
Rob Zenas, Chase Antle, Trevor Farrell, Matt Szabo, Devin Daugherty and Tyler Anderson each threw one scoreless inning in relief for the Orange and Brown.
Basalyga went 2-for-4 in the loss. Derek Drewes, Glanzman and Smith each had a hit apiece.
The Falcons will return to Steller Field to take on the Northern Illinois University Huskies over April 29–May 1. Friday's (April 29) game is set to begin at 3:05 p.m., while the Saturday (April 30) and Sunday (May 1) games will start at 1:05 p.m.
