Northern Illinois Takes Series Opener From Bowling Green
April 29, 2016 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by the Northern Illinois University Huskies, 20-4, Friday (April 29) afternoon at Steller Field. Northern Illinois scored 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull away with the victory.
"We really just have to flush this game from our systems," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We obviously gave them too many free base runners, and a good team will make you pay for that. We still have two games to go in this series, and the rest of the weekend is very important for our program."
With the loss, Bowling Green falls to 16-26 on the season and 6-10 in the Mid-American Conference. Northern Illinois improves to 16-25 (10-6 MAC) with the win.
William Anderson for Northern Illinois pitched a great game, and earned the win. The lanky right-hander blanked the Falcons over six innings. Anderson allowed just three hits, while striking out two batters and walking three.
Matthew Hoffmann and Aaron Rumfield combined to throw the final three innings for the Huskies. Each pitcher was roughed up for a pair of runs, as Bowling Green plated two runs apiece in both the seventh and eighth.
Matt Smith had another strong day at the plate, as the senior outfielder pushed his hitting streak to 13 games. Smith finished the game 2-for-5 with an RBI and one run scored.
Freshman Cam Daugherty registered two hits in a ballgame for the first time in his career. Daugherty went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Greg Basalyga and Tyler Greiner registered Bowling Green's two other hits. Blake Jenkins also recorded his first-career RBI in the contest.
In total, the Huskies out-hit the Falcons, 13-6. The Falcons were forced to use eight different pitchers in the ballgame.
The series will resume tomorrow at 12 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch, but due to expected inclement weather later on in the afternoon, both teams agreed to move the game up to noon. The Falcons and Huskies will conclude the series on Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. start time.
