SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Northern Illinois enters play this weekend on a three-game winning streak, owning an overall record of 15-25, including a 9-6 mark in the Mid-American Conference. The Huskies currently sit in second place in the MAC West, and if the season ended today, the Huskies would be the four seed in the MAC Tournament. Northern Illinois has won four of its five conference weekends. NIU is batting .262 as a team, led by Tommy Hook (.321), Justin Fletcher (.304) and Stephen Letz (.303). The Huskies' weekend rotation – William Anderson (3.59), Donovin Sims (4.50) and Ryan Olson (4.85) – own the lowest ERA's on the team.
SCHMITZ SAYS…
"With only three MAC weekends to go, it goes without saying that this series is very important to us," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We have played better baseball as of late, especially within the Mid-American Conference, but we are still battling for a spot in Avon. We always place an emphasis on protecting our home field, and we are excited to play in front of our fans at Steller Field again after playing five-straight road games."
IF THE MAC TOURNAMENT STARTED TODAY
After starting the conference season with four-consecutive losses, Bowling Green has fought back. The Falcons are now 6-9 in MAC play, and would own the seven seed if the MAC Tournament started today. The top eight teams make it to the tournament in Avon, Ohio. Bowling Green sits one game ahead of both Buffalo and Ohio – both schools are 5-10. Toledo and Western Michigan own identical 4-8 records, but have played one less series than the Falcons. The Orange and Brown are also close to catching 6-6 Eastern Michigan and 5-7 Central Michigan – two schools that have also played only 12 conference games.
BREAKING DOWN THE SERIES WIN AT BALL STATE
Over April 22-24, the Falcons claimed their third conference series of the season by beating Ball State, two-games-to-one. BGSU downed Ball State, 5-1, on Friday (April 22), and after losing on Saturday, the Falcons clinched the series with an 8-7 win on Sunday (April 24). Ball State had not lost a conference series since May of 2015. Furthermore, the Cardinals had not lost a conference game this year on Saturday or Sunday, prior to BGSU's 8-7 win on Sunday. The Falcons held Ball State – a team that was averaging over 10 runs per MAC game – to 11 runs over the weekend.
TONY LANDI LOGS INCREDIBLE WEEK
Tony Landi, a junior from Geneva, Ill., played a massive role in leading Bowling Green to a 3-1 mark last week. Landi, remarkably, pitched in all four games, logging a total of 5.2 innings. He pitched two scoreless innings at Wright State Wednesday, allowing just two hits while blanking the Raiders in the ninth and 10th innings en route to earning the victory. On Friday, Landi picked up the save by logging 1.1 hitless innings. Landi then pitched a perfect inning in Saturday's loss, before an extremely clutch performance in the series-clinching win at Ball State on Sunday. Landi entered in the eighth inning in an 8-7 game with two outs and runners at the corners. BGSU's closer escaped the jam by inducing a weak grounder against the first batter he faced. In the ninth, Landi induced a game-ending, series-clinching, 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded. The save was Landi's eighth of the season.
DOC EARNS BOTH WINS IN MUNCIE
Senior captain Devin Daugherty, who hails from Wooster, Ohio, picked up both wins over the weekend at Ball State. Daugherty, who almost always is the first arm used out of the bullpen on the weekend, ran his record to 4-1 with the pair of victories. The right-hander has also registered two saves on the season. Daugherty pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in the win on Friday. On Sunday, with a runner on second, Daugherty – who went on to pitch 1.1 innings – recorded two consecutive outs to keep Bowling Green's 8-4 lead intact into the sixth inning. On the season, the senior has thrown 40.0 innings, striking out a total of 37 batters. His 2.92 ERA is second-best on the team.
BOWLING GREEN UNDEFEATED WHEN LEADING AFTER SEVEN
The Falcons are a perfect 14-0 when leading after seven innings. So, it goes without saying that the backend of the Falcon bullpen has been phenomenal. Devin Daugherty, Kody Brown and Tony Landi – Bowling Green's top bullpen arms – are all having strong seasons. Daugherty and Landi lead the team in appearances with 21. Brown is not far behind with 18. Daugherty (2.92 ERA), who leads the team in wins with four while also having a pair of saves, and Landi (2.93 ERA), who leads the team in saves with eight, have near identical ERA's. Brown also has a save on the season, and owns a 3.10 ERA. The sophomore has struck out 13 batters across 20.1 innings.
SMITH CONTINUES TO SMASH ON 12-GAME HITTING STREAK
Matt Smith will enter the weekend on a 12-game hitting streak. The senior captain from Johnstown, Ohio has recorded a hit in 16 of Bowling Green's last 17 ballgames. Over that 17-game stretch, Smith has improved his batting average by 86 points. On March 29, Smith entered the Findlay game with a .202 average – 28 hits later, the senior is now batting .288. Smith leads the Falcons with 14 multiple-hit games on the season, and has recorded three hits a team-best four times. Bowling Green's left fielder is also tied for the team lead in multiple-RBI games with four.
MINORIK PROVING TO BE A COMPLETE PLAYER
If you are a fan of Bowling Green baseball, you have to be excited with the freshman season that Riley Minorik has been able to put together. Minorik is batting .266 on the season, and leads the team in home runs with four, while also having a team-high .422 slugging percentage. The Akron, Ohio native has also been great on the base paths, as he has scored 21 runs, only one run behind team-leader Matt Smith. Minorik has also been a staple at second base this season, and has fielded his position admirably. The young second baseman owns a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, and his 70 assists rank second on the club.
BASALYGA WITH 10 RBI OVER THE LAST 10 BALLGAMES
Greg Basalyga has had a massive second half to the season. Over his last 10 games, specifically, he's been red hot. Over the current 10-game stretch, the junior is 14-for-38 (.368) with 10 RBI, four runs, four doubles and one home run. The Pickerington Central graduate is hitting .278 now on the season, and is leading the team with 22 RBI. His 35 hits rank second only to Matt Smith's 47. Basalyga has five multiple-hit games over the past 10 contests, and has played his best baseball within the Mid-American Conference. In MAC play, the junior is hitting .321 with a team-high nine RBI. Â
DANNY SCHMITZ PICKS UP 675TH WIN, 350TH MAC WIN
Skipper Danny Schmitz picked up his 675th-career win, and 350th-career MAC win, as Bowling Green clinched a weekend series over Ohio with a 6-2 victory on April 16. Schmitz, who is in his 26th season at the helm of the program, is the conference's active leader in total wins and conference wins. Schmitz sits third all-time, as well, in both categories. Only Fred Decker (Western Michigan – 791 total wins, 401 MAC wins) and Joe Carbone (Ohio – 689 total wins, 368 MAC wins) have won more baseball games within the Mid-American Conference than Danny Schmitz.
SCHMITZ ASSEMBLES STAFF FILLED WITH FALCONS
With the addition of 2014 BGSU graduate Jeremy Shay as volunteer assistant coach in the offseason, head coach Danny Schmitz's staff is now entirely made up of former Falcons. In fact, all three of Schmitz's assistants played for him during their careers at BGSU. All three also won a championship under Schmitz's guidance. Rick Blanc – who enters his 9th year on staff – was a part of the 1998 squad that won a MAC Tournament title, and participated in NCAA Regionals in Coral Gables, Florida. Ryan Shay – who completed his first season on staff in 2015 – won back-to-back MAC regular-season titles as a player in 2008 and 2009. Shay's brother, Jeremy, enters his first year on the coaching staff. Shay was a part of the 2014 team's Cinderella run late in the season that was capped by a MAC Tournament title and a birth in the NCAA Regionals in Louisville, Kentucky.
