BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost to the Northern Illinois University Huskies, 2-0, Saturday (April 30) afternoon at Steller Field. NIU's Stephen Letz hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, which proved to be the difference in the contest. Both schools recorded six hits apiece.
"Zac Carey pitched his heart out today," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Tony Landi did his job, too. We just didn't get a clutch hit. We had a couple of chances to get some runs on the board, but we never came through. We really need to figure out a way to salvage the series, and get a win tomorrow."
Bowling Green drops to 16-27, and 6-11 in the Mid-American Conference with the loss, while Northern Illinois improves to 17-25 (11-6 MAC).
Zac Carey pitched masterfully in the loss for Bowling Green. The sophomore pitched 7.2 innings, with the two-run home run in the fourth being his lone blemish. Carey allowed just five hits, and stuck out two batters. The right-hander issued just on free pass.
Northern Illinois' Ryan Olson also pitched a great game, and he picked up the win for the Huskies. The lefty struck out nine batters, and allowed four hits. He walked two Bowling green batters.
Bowling Green didn't go quietly in the ninth, as they put a real scare into the Huskies. Greg Basalyga and R.J. Williams hit consecutive singles to open up the frame. However, Cam Daugherty's sacrificed bunt attempt resulted in Basalyga being forced out at third base. NIU's Ryne Olson then set down the next two batters to end the ballgame.
Tony Landi gave the Falcons a chance to come back, as he took over for Carey and blanked the Huskies over 1.1 innings of work, but the comeback effort fell a couple of hits short.
The Falcons loaded the bases in the seventh inning, as Tyler Greiner reached on an error after Daugherty and Cody Callaway hit back-to-back two-out singles, but a ground out to short end the threat.
Matt Smith's 13-game hitting streak came to an end today, as the senior left fielder went 0-for-3 with a walk.
The series will conclude tomorrow afternoon with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. The Falcons will not play a midweek game next week, due to the fact that it is finals week at BGSU. Bowling Green will then travel to Tallahassee, Florida to take on the No. 5 ranked Florida State Seminoles over May 6-8.
