TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost to the 8th-ranked Florida State University Seminoles, 10-0, Saturday (May 7) evening at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles scored five in the second to break the game open early.
Bowling Green falls to 16-30 with the loss, while Florida State improves to 31-13 with the victory.
"We had a chance to jump ahead in the first, and then they quickly broke it open in the second," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "When you are playing a team as talented as Florida State, it's so important to play from in front. They are such a potent offense, and they will continue to tack on runs. We have to come out tomorrow, and give them everything we have."
The Falcons had a good opportunity to open the scoring in the top of the first, as R.J. Williams led off the game with a single into right. Riley Minorik then moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but the next two Falcon batters were set down in order.
Florida State then broke through in the bottom of the second, as they scored five runs on six hits to take a 5-0 lead. The Seminoles tacked on an unearned run in the third, increasing their lead to 6-0.
Bowling Green threatened again in the fourth, putting runners on the corners, but a strikeout ended the frame. Matt Smith singled to start the inning, and then Derek Drewes walked with one-out. Kory Brown put runners on the corners with a fielder's choice hit to the shortstop, but the strikeout kept BGSU's deficit at 6-0.
In the fourth, Quincy Nieporte hit a three-run home run, staking the hosts to a 9-0 lead. Zac Carey, who was battling a cold, gutted out four innings for the Orange and Brown. He was relieved in the fifth inning by Brad Croy.
Croy did a nice job from out of the bullpen, and stabilized the game for the Falcons. The Seminoles plated one run in the sixth, but Croy blanked them in both the fifth and seventh. Croy allowed three hits over his three innings of work, and struck out two batters while walking one.
Rob Zenas entered in the eighth inning, and after putting runners on first and second, he finished off a scoreless frame with a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
Williams had a big day at the plate in the loss, as the freshman went 3-for-4. Smith went 2-for-3, while the Falcons' other hit was recorded by Hunter Clanin.
Bowling Green and the Seminoles will conclude the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The Falcons will then return to Steller Field to conclude the home portion of their schedule next week. Bowling Green will play a midweek game on May 11 versus Youngstown State, before welcoming Kent State to Bowling Green across May 13-15.
