BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Bowling Green hockey program (14-15-2, 12-11-1 WCHA) suffered a 5-0 loss Saturday evening to Western Collegiate Hockey Association rival Ferris State (9-16-4, 8-11-3 WCHA) on the road in Ewigleben Ice Arena.
"It was a no-show tonight except for Chris Nell," Bowling Green hockey head coach Chris Bergeron said. "I felt bad for him because unfortunately we left him out on an island, which I don't like to do because he's playing good hockey. The team wasn't giving the effort in front of him."
The Falcons were able to get through the first period without allowing any goals to the Bulldogs by the hand of junior goaltender Chris Nell. The Green Bay, Wis. native accumulated 17 saves through the first 20:00 of action, the most in a period this season. Ultimately, Nell tallied 30 saves on the night for a save percentage of .857, and was just three saves shy of his season-best of 33 (vs. Michigan Tech, Dec. 9).
Bowling Green's best scoring chance in the first period came when sophomore John Schilling received a feed from along the right boards with just under five minutes remaining in the period. Although it was the Falcons best look at the net in the period, the shot was tipped high by Ferris State's goaltender Justin Kapelmaster.
Ferris State broke the scoreless matchup at the 2:51 mark into the second stanza when they were able to go up 1-0. The Bulldogs got ahead by a 2-0 margin 8:59 in with a pass along the boards and shot low in the slot. With just 1:36 remaining in the second period, Ferris State took a commanding 3-0 lead in 4-on-4 play with a similar play, and extended its lead to 4-0 in quick succession with a goal scored with just 29.4 remaining in the period to close it out. The Bulldogs then scored its fifth of the night at even strength midway through the third.
Midway through the second period, the Falcons were able to burn 1:06 of 5-on-3 penalty kill, one of Ferris State's four power play chances of the night. Bowling Green held its opponent scoreless with the man advantage for the 15th time this season, and have successfully killed its opponents last 22 consecutive power play opportunities.
"Tonight we only drew one penalty, which I think is a good indicator that we weren't close to our best," Coach Bergeron said of the special team play. "We haven't been taking undisciplined penalties necessarily, but we have been taking too many penalties, and tonight we get a too many men on the ice and that puts us down 5-on-3. So a good night penalty killing-wise, but just some poor penalties on our part."
Bowling Green did not see power play time until there was 11:37 remaining in regulation, as Ferris State was called for interference. It was the only man advantage of the night for the Falcons.
Offensively, junior Brett D'Andrea led the Bowling Green squad with three shots on goal, while sophomore Chris Pohlkamp blocked four shots to top the team's defensive lines.
Overall, Bowling Green was held to the fewest shots on goal of the season with just 19 testing Kapelmaster. It was also the first time of the 2016-17 campaign the Falcons were shutout. Ferris State tallied 35 shots on goal, just one shy of the most allowed by the Falcons this year.
The Bowling Green hockey program will return to the Slater Family Ice Arena on Jan. 3 and 4 as it welcomes Northern Michigan for WCHA play. Both matchups are set for a 7:07 p.m. puck drop.
