EMERSON, Ga. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team won both games of its doubleheader on Friday (March 10) evening. Bowling Green defeated Georgia State, 4-1, before knocking off Army by a score of 5-0 in the nightcap. Both games were played at the LakePoint Sports Complex in Emerson, Georgia.
The Bowling Green pitching staff allowed just two hits in each game, and the Falcons' 5-0 victory over Army marked the program's first shutout win since a 4-0 win over Central Michigan on March 22, 2016. Bowling Green improves to 3-9 on the season with the pair of victories.
"I was extremely proud of our effort and execution today," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We just have not been able to execute in the three phrases very much to start the season, but we executed at a high level for the entire day, and throughout both games. We've just played very well here for the last two seasons, and it would be great if we could finish off the weekend on a positive note heading into four home games next week."
In the first game, the Falcons received a brilliant effort from starter Tyler Anderson. In 6.0 innings of work, Anderson allowed just two hits and one run while striking out four batters and walking three. Dating back to his previous start, the righty had logged 12.1-consecutive scoreless innings prior to yielding a solo home run in the sixth.
In four starts this season, which covers 22.1 innings, Anderson has allowed 17 hits, and owns a 2.01 ERA. He's registered a team-high 12 strikeouts.
Bowling Green played with the lead from the start. After a Derek Drewes single in the first, Greg Basalyga launched a two-run home run. The home run was the second on the season for Basalyga.
In the second, Bowling Green tacked on another run to take a 3-0 lead. Similar to the first inning, the rally started with a one-one single. This time, Logan Giddings delivered the base hit, and then Jeff Scott, Bowling Green's next batter, doubled down the left field line, scoring Giddings in the process.
After Georgia State's home run in the sixth, Bowling Green got the run right back in the seventh. Again, the Orange and Brown got things going with a one-out base knock. Scott singled, and then advance to second on a wild pitch. Jake Wilson followed with a single to right, which put runners on the corners. Nick Glanzman then scored Scott with a ground out to first base.
Kody Brown was dominant in relief of Anderson. The southpaw logged 3.0 scoreless innings, including a pair of perfect frames in the eighth and ninth. After Anderson walked the first batter of the seventh, Brown entered the game and also issued a free pass. From there, Brown retired nine-consecutive Georgia State batters to conclude the ballgame.
In game two, the Falcons received another tremendous outing from their starter. Chase Antle logged 4.2 innings, and had a no-hitter into the fifth inning. The right-hander allowed just one hit, while walking three and fanning four.
The Falcons played small ball to jump out to a 4-0 lead. In the fourth, Nick Glanzman singled to start the frame. Riley Minorik then bunted him over to second, before Greg Basalyga doubled him home.
In the sixth, Bowling Green struck for three runs. Justin Mott, who gunned down two would-be base stealers on the night, started the rally with a single. Jake Wilson then reached on a single, prior to Glanzman moving both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Minorik and Basalyga followed with consecutive run-scoring singles, bumping BGSU's lead up to 3-0. An Army error allowed a fourth run to come home.
Basalyga added to the lead with a two-out double that scored Glanzman. Both Glanzman and Basalyga led the Bowling Green offense. Basalyga, who had five RBI on the day, went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles in the win over Army, while Glanzman 2-for-4 with two runs. Wilson also went 2-for-4.
Nathan Lohmeier picked up right where Antle left off, and gave the Orange and Brown 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball. The left-hander surrendered just one hit, and struck out four batters while issuing three walks. Fellow freshman Damon Egnor finished off the ballgame by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.
The Falcons will conclude their annual spring trip by taking on these same two opponents. Bowling Green will battle Army again tomorrow (March 11) at 4:30 p.m., before concluding the weekend with a Sunday (March 12) game versus Georgia State at 12 p.m.Â
