No. 8 Falcons To Host No. 18 Huskies In Ranked WCHA Matchup
January 27, 2021 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The No. 8 Bowling Green State University hockey team will be back in WCHA action this weekend after two consecutive non-conference series. Their return will be greeted by a ranked matchup in No.18 Michigan Tech. The Huskies will be the first ranked opponent for the Falcons in over a month, last facing No. 11 Quinnipiac. Both games will be 7:07 p.m. puck drops and will be streamed on FloHockey.Â
Â
Hosting The HuskiesÂ
Michigan Tech will enter the weekend coming off a non-conference sweep over Northern Michigan in a home-and-home series. After both teams had their originally scheduled games postponed, they opted to face-off and the Huskies came out on top in both matchups. Michigan Tech first saw a 2-0 shutout before following it up with a 4-1 victory to complete the series sweep. In total, the Huskies are currently riding a seven-game win streak with their last loss being back on Dec. 12 in a 6-3 final against Bemidji State. During the win streak they have three shutouts and have allowed more than one goal just once.Â
The Games At A GlanceÂ
Defense will be a focal point in the upcoming series between the Falcons and Huskies. While both teams enter ranked in the Top 20 in the nation, they also enter as two of the best teams defensively in the country. The Falcons have posted an impressive 1.83 goals allowed average, being just one of five teams in the country to allow less than two goals per game. However, Michigan Tech is one of those five teams as well, being second in the nation while giving up an average of 1.58 goals per game. On the other side of the coin, the Falcons have the sixth best scoring offense, averaging 3.83 goals per game whereas Michigan Tech is 33rd in the nation with a mark of 2.42. The difference in this coming series could come down to which strength prevails.Â
Kruse-ing At Top SpeedsÂ
With another multiple-point series with a goal and an assist against Bemidji State this past weekend, Brandon Kruse has now scored at least one point in 12 straight games for the Falcons and in 15 of their 18 this season. Over the 12-game stretch, Kruse has 16 points, consisting of seven goals and nine assists. The streak began with a three-assist game against Ferris State on Dec. 12. He also had back-to-back two-point games against Ferris State on Jan. 2 and 3. In addition to the scoring streak for Kruse, he also is now up to 93 career assists with the Falcons, needing seven more to become the 21st player in program history to reach 100 career assists.Â
Wright On TrackÂ
Bowling Green has already had two players reach 100 career points this season in addition to Brandon Kruse doing so last year. Now, Cameron Wright is gaining ground on becoming the fourth active Falcon to reach the century mark for career points. Wright has tallied 19 points so far this season and now has 91 career points in the Orange and Brown, needing just nine more to become the program's 76th player all-time to reach the mark.Â
Falcons Pacing The NationÂ
So far this season, Bowling Green has been able to net 69 scores, a mark that leads the nation. Only three teams have scored more than 60 goals this season with Robert Morris (62) and Minnesota (66) joining the Falcons. Also being tied for the most games played with 18, the Falcons offense is averaging the sixth most goals per game in the nation at 3.83. This comes in large part to having 23 different players tally a point this season, including goalie Eric Dop with an assist. Additionally, five players are in the top 100 nationally for points per game and Brandon Kruse is one of just three players in the nation to have 20 points or more.Â
Two Record Seasons In ProgressÂ
As it currently stands in the record book, the record for a single season save percentage belongs to Chris Nell during the 2015-16 season with a mark of .930. However, Eric Dop is currently on pace to break that record, maintaining a save percentage .934. The catch, though, is that if the season ended today Dop wouldn't hold the record. Instead, Zack Rose would claim that mantle with a mark just a bit higher at .935 that would take the top spot in the record book. Rose and Dop are currently 10th and 11th in the nation, respectively, for the stat. Both are also in the top 15 in the nation for goals against average as well.Â
