Bowling Green Set To Face Northern Michigan This Weekend
February 18, 2021 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The No. 14 Bowling Green State University hockey team will turn their attention to a rematch with the Northern Michigan Wildcats this weekend. The two teams faced off earlier this season in a non-conference series that saw the Falcons capture a series sweep over the Wildcats. Northern Michigan will enter on the outside looking in on the USCHO poll, receiving votes in the latest edition. Northern Michigan is now the fourth straight team that Bowling Green has faced that has been at least receiving votes in the poll. Lake Superior State was receiving votes at the time of the series while Minnesota State was No. 6 and Michigan Tech No. 18.Â

Working Against The WildcatsÂ
Northern Michigan will enter the weekend series on short rest after facing Alabama Huntsville on Tuesday (Feb. 16) and Wednesday (Feb. 17), but the Wildcats have had a bout of good fortune on the ice of late. After a tough stretch in January that saw NMU lose eight straight, they've since rebounded before splitting with Huntsville earlier this week. Over that stretch, three of the games went into overtime while a total of four of them have been decided by just a single goal. The Wildcats are led by Joseph Nardi who is sixth in the nation for points per game, averaging 1.28 points per contest with Andre Ghantous not far behind at 12th in the nation with an average of 1.21 points per game.Â
The Games At A GlanceÂ
The Falcons and Wildcats last faced off earlier this year on Jan. 15 and 16 in a two-game series that saw the Orange and Brown come out with a sweep. In the first game of the series, the two teams played to a 5-1 final score thanks to goals from Carson Musser, Chrys Collin, Evan Dougherty, Brandon Kruse and Will Cullen. Eric Dop also totaled a season-high 36 saves in the contest, just one off of his career-high. As for the second game, Bowling Green captured their 1,000th win as a program behind a 6-2 final score. Cameron Wright, Kruse, Alex Barber, Taylor Schneider, Max Johnson and Cullen were the goal scorers for the Falcons in the contest. Between the pipes, Zack Rose logged 27 saves for the Orange and Brown. With the win, the Falcons became the 26th program in the nation to reach 1,000 wins as just the third among teams that began play after World War II.Â
One More KruseÂ
After having two assists this past weekend, Brandon Kruse is closing in on adding his name to the BG Falcon Hockey record book for career points for the second time. Kruse is currently at 99 career assists in the Orange and Brown, needing just one more to become the team's first player to log 100 career assists since Kelly Perrault during the 1996-97 season and just the 21st all-time. This season, Kruse has totaled 28 points, the third most in the country and is averaging 1.17 points per game, which is 14th in the country.
Wright On The Doorstep Â
As for Cameron Wright, he needs just three points to become the team's fourth active 100-point scorer, currently sitting at 97 points after scoring three goals against Lake Superior State. If Wright reaches the mark it would be the first time since the 1996-97 season that the Falcons have at least four active players with 100 career points. In that season, Bowling Green rostered Curtis Fry (194 points), Mike Johnson (162), Kelly Perrault (148) and Brett Punchard (135). Wright would join Brandon Kruse, who has 136 points, as well as Max Johnson (116) and Connor Ford (108). Â
Closing In On 20 Wins
With 16 wins, the Falcons are closing in on accomplishing their 20th win of the season. If they can do so it would mark the seventh consecutive season with 20 wins or more, becoming the second longest streak in program history, with the record being nine straight seasons from 1981-82 until the 1989-90 campaign. The current streak began during the 2014-15 season. From then up until this point, the Falcons have accumulated a 151-107-28 record for a .577 winning percentage.Â
