Falcons Pick Up Victory In Extra Innings Over Akron To Close Out Weekend Series

AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team went to extra innings for the first time this season on Sunday (March 19), topping the Akron Zips 5-4 in 10 innings. Tyler Ross hit a solo home run in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. Bowling Green moved out in front in the ninth with Adam Fallon scoring on a Kyle Gurney single. Akron responded to force extras, but in the top of the 10th, DJ Newman scored on a Jack Krause grounder to give the Falcons the lead and the 5-4 win.
DJ Newman picked up the win on the mound, pitching two innings for the Orange and Brown. Isaiah Seidel came on to close out the game for the save in the bottom of the tenth, his first save of the season. The win moves BGSU to 2-4 within the MAC through the first two conference series of the season.

The Falcons are scheduled for two midweek home games this week. BGSU will first host Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday (March 21) before welcoming Youngstown State to Steller Field on Wednesday (March 22), both scheduled for 3 p.m. starts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the top of the first, Nathan Rose worked through a 14-pitch at-bat, including seven straight foul balls, that resulted in a walk to put two on for the Falcons, but Akron worked through the inning to keep it scoreless going into the bottom of the first.
- Akron scored in the bottom half to tally the first run of the game. A leadoff walk put a runner on, moving to second on a wild pitch and third on a steal before scoring on a single.
- In the top of the third, Adam Fallon began the inning by reaching first on an error. Fallon moved up to second on a bunt before scoring on a shallow single to left center by Kyle Gurney to tie it up at 1-1.
- In the next at-bat, Gurney stole second and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Nathan Archer then sent a sacrifice fly to deep center, scoring Gurney to push BGSU out in front 2-1.
- In the bottom of the fourth, a two-RBI blooper to left field scored two for Akron to put them up 3-2.
- The next run came in the top of the sixth for the Falcons with Tyler Ross sending a solo home run to left field, tying it up at 3-3.
- In the top of the ninth, Fallon was hit by a pitch before stealing second. Gurney found a hole on the right side, singling to score Fallon and push the Falcons back to a 4-3 lead.
- Akron logged a run in the bottom of the ninth to knot it up at 4-4, sending the game to extra innings.
- In the 10th, DJ Newman singled to left field and moved up to third on a fielding error. Jack Krause followed with a grounder that was enough for Newman to score, making it a 5-4 BGSU lead and win.

- DJ Newman completed a strong weekend for the Falcons. Newman logged a hit at the plate, continuing a three-game hit streak. He then scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th, giving him the win on the mound as well after pitching two innings with four strikeouts.
- Isaiah Seidel took over in the bottom of the 10th and picked up his first save as a Falcon, pitching a scoreless inning. Through three appearances this season, Seidel has allowed just one hit and no runs over 5.2 innings of work.
- Tyler Ross hit his first home run of the season and third as a Falcon. Ross had one home run in 2022 and one in 2021.
- Kyle Gurney logged a season-high three hits for the Falcons and two RBI, his third multiple-RBI game this season.
